#FunFriday: Last weekend, I went to In a Landscape, a classical piano concert in the wild. Pianist @HunterNoack performed at Jack London State Park, with music drifting through the vines in the open air.

I’ve been a supporter since day one and absolutely love this concept. Hunter travels with a 9-foot Steinway grand piano, the same kind played at Carnegie Hall, and trailers it to stunning outdoor locations across the West.

Audience members wear wireless headphones and are encouraged to wander through nature while listening. It’s intimate, immersive, and absolutely glorious.

I’ve heard Hunter play at the top of Mt. Bachelor, the base of Smith Rock, in Golden Gate Park, Crissy Field, and many beautiful places in between.

Last week, @deepseek_ai's low-cost, high-performance model sent shockwaves through the AI world.

Now, @OpenAI has responded.

On Friday, OpenAI launched O3-mini, an upgraded reasoning model with improved coding, math, and structured responses. Alongside it, they introduced Deep Research, a ChatGPT feature that autonomously analyzes web pages, images, and PDFs to generate reports in fields like finance, biology, and engineering.  ​Unlike previous rollouts, they made O3-mini available to all 350 million ChatGPT users immediately—a clear sign they’re moving fast to stay ahead.

But the most telling moment came from Sam Altman’s Reddit AMA, where he admitted, “I personally think we have been on the wrong side of history here and need to figure out a different open-source strategy.”

This shift isn’t just about open-source models. Since OpenAI transitioned from a nonprofit to a for-profit entity, AI researchers have criticized its move, arguing it contradicts its original mission. Now, facing new competition, OpenAI is being forced to rethink its position.

At the same time, AI development is becoming a race for smarter, leaner, and more cost-effective models. If cutting-edge performance can be achieved with lower compute and energy consumption, big AI companies will need to justify their enormous training budgets and carbon footprints.

The innovation gap between the U.S. and China is narrowing, and new challengers are emerging. Can OpenAI adapt fast enough to maintain its dominance, or will it be overtaken by those building AI that is cheaper, faster, and more sustainable?
