@KaitlynGrandy I agree! After I watched the documentary I actually asked my parents how much they payed for childcare whilst I was growing up ... it was insane. I don’t get why it’s too much to ask for accessible and affordable childcare? #GNDR1000S2020
SS44 revealed to me how exclusive activist circles are. Activist settings usually revolve around white women who are addressing issues such as disability, racism, and 2SLGBTQ rights and yet continue to exclude these groups in these conversations. We must do better! #GNDR1000S2020
@Heatherblake123 I agree! Sex work is REAL work. I can’t believe that in conversations about feminism, sex workers are left out. This exclusion is worsened for 2SLGBTQ+ sex workers. We all must do better to include sex workers in conversations about politics, law, feminism, etc! #GNDR1000S2020
The following link was a great resource for me about how colonial violence translates into the Canadian healthcare system!! And how through the Canadian healthcare system, Indigenous peoples face violence, discrimination, and racism. #GNDR1000S2020 https://t.co/9FefVBRKii
Chapter 58 was a reminder of Canada’s habit of sweeping “missing” indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQ peoples under the rug. Euphanizing the violence they have faced is perpetuating colonial violence against indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQ peoples #GNDR1000S2020
@DeniseLoar @Heatherblake123@sarahpow2020 agreed! whenever my male boss calls me sweetheart it makes me so uncomfortable! I feel infantilized even though I am an adult woman. I still don't understand why men think women enjoy being called by a pet name when the majority of us think its super creepy! #GNDR1000S2020
@GraceCallahan99 I think prejudice towards stay at home mothers is related to the sexist ideology that women can never do enough. Stay at home moms are belittled and titled lazy because they do not "work" but their hard work is hidden behind closed doors and usually goes unnoticed! #GNDR1000S2020
As a student who works a low wage job, chapter 67 resonated with me. Many of my peers likely experience poverty while working low wage jobs and trying to attend school. Minimum wage was made so that one could support themselves and yet so many are living in poverty #GNDR1000S2020
I've been ignored and belittled in my workplace while my male counterparts have been uplifted and listened to. My time and privacy has been disrespected and it's been deemed okay. This will continue to happen until something is done and something must be done! #GNDR1000S2020
Being a woman in the healthcare system is exhausting. I’ve had to prove to male doctors that I was in pain and that it was not just period troubles. Women’s health MUST be taken seriously and change must occur in medical education to prevent this from happening. #GNDR1000S2020
@HaragaNatasha I completely agree!! I truly believe that alongside medical training, doctors should also learn about the history of prejudice against POC, the poor, and women in the medical system! If doctors continue to remain ignorant, nothing can change #GNDR1000S2020
@alexiscoombs7 Unfortunately, I have experienced this first hand! There have been countless times my pain has been trivialized by male doctors. Half of the time male doctors seem to think it’s PMS? I can’t even imagine how I’d be dismissed if I was a WOC! #GNDR1000S2020
@SarahSh77738205 I feel like from such a young age, women are taught that if they’re not skinny they’re ugly. I’ve struggled so much with my body confidence and image that it’s actually consumed hours of my day. Unfortunately, being a certain weight won’t make anyone truly happy #GNDR1000S2020
@KateMorrissey11 I’ve also had awful experiences with medical practitioners denying my physical health symptoms as well as my mental health symptoms. I even had a psychiatrist tell me I was actively choosing to feel anxious. The way the medical field treats women is actually scary #GNDR1000S2020
This weeks readings really resonated with me. As a girl who grew up with an atypical body type, I’ve ALWAYS been insecure about what I look like. Sometimes I feel like I’m the only one. The fact that so many women deal with this much self hatred is awful. #GNDR1000S2020
@LauraPa55474532 I absolutely agree! I've literally never learned about slavery in school here in NL! I was always taught it was an American issue that they need to resolve. I was horrified to learn Canada is just as guilty but that they continue to hide it! #GNDR1000S2020
@rheannyn This line actually broke my heart when I read it! Sometimes I feel like Canada still isn't listening to what indigenous people actually need for their communities and community members to prosper. #GNDR1000S2020
@RebeccadtTaylor Agreed! I love how the narrator calls it "celebrating colonialism" because that is what we're actually celebrating, our violent conquest into indigenous lands! I wish Canada Day was more about celebrating indigenous peoples and less about red balloons and beers #GNDR1000S2020
Today and everyday, we must remember that we are living on land stolen from Indigneous people and that colonial violence against indigenous people still exists. perhaps take a moment of silence today to remember all of the indigenous lives that have been lost. #GNDR1000S2020
@SarahAn08326229#GNDR1000S2020 I was also surprised to learn about our history of slavery. I regret to say that I always felt it was an America problem and not a Canadian one! Boy was I ever wrong! Now I realize we are just as bad as America was, if not worse because we hide it so deeply!
