Fabulists are always psychologically vulnerable or they wouldn't be fabulists. I've known a couple personally (both white women, one of them very young) and both, beneath a veneer of apparent narcissism, were damaged people who clearly felt they weren't and never would be good enough if the fabrications were stripped away.

Journalist Johann Hari survived plagiarism charges. Belle Gibson, of the fake brain tumour, the best-selling cookbook and the deal with Apple, is still alive and well. On the other hand, Brenda Leyland (another fabulist) killed herself rather than deal with the aftermath of exposure as an obsessive online persecutor of the McCann family.

If it's true Arday's stories about himself weren't challenged because Cambridge was excited to appoint a charismatic young black man, it's equally true that his blackness meant he became a lightning rod for discourse around DEI, and I don't doubt the weight of shame, and mockery and condemnation, even if a lot of it fell on Cambridge rather than Arday personally, seemed unsurvivable to him. He and Leyland both became unwilling, living symbols of something bigger than themselves: DEI taken to a ludicrous extreme and vicious online trolling.

I have some personal experience of becoming a dehumanised online punchbag. It takes a lot of psychological strength not to go under and when I heard that Arday was dead I felt utterly miserable.

I don't disagree that he'd never have found himself exposed in such a public way if he'd been challenged, kindly and privately, before he was given a highly-publicised professorship at what is supposed to be one of the world's best universities. However, saying that his promoters 'don't give a toss about him' seems extreme.
