Did you know the magical land of Narnia has a real-life Catholic connection?
C.S. Lewis didn’t pull the name “Narnia” out of thin air. He discovered it as a boy on a map of ancient Italy z the Latin name for the Umbrian town of Narni.
But the story gets even better.
There was a real Blessed Lucy of Narnia (Lucia Brocadelli, a Dominican mystic) from that very town.
Her extraordinary life:
. As a child she had visions of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
. She took a private vow of virginity and lived it even after an arranged marriage (she and her husband lived chastely as brother and sister).
. She became a Dominican tertiary, served as prioress, and received the stigmata, the wounds of Christ.
. Known for heroic charity, miraculous provision for the poor, and profound prayer.
After years of persecution and confinement, she died in 1544. Her body was later found incorrupt.
Beatified by Pope Clement XI in 1710. Feast day: November 16.
Some Lewis scholars (including his secretary Walter Hooper) have noted the fascinating parallel: a brave, faith-filled girl named Lucy who sees what others cannot,
just like Lucy Pevensie, the first to enter the wardrobe and the one who never stops believing in Aslan.
Whether Lewis consciously drew inspiration from Blessed Lucy or not, the connection feels almost providential. The name that sparked one of the greatest fantasy worlds of all time belonged to a real saintly woman whose life was filled with wonder, courage, and divine encounters.
Blessed Lucy of Narnia, pray for us, and for all who long to see Aslan’s country.
Van Gogh once wrote one of the most beautiful sentences I have ever read:
"Just as we take the train to go to Tarascon or Rouen, we take death to reach a star."
You have seen the painting below hundreds of times, but you probably do not know the story behind it, and it is as unbearably beautiful as the words you just read...
Van Gogh had painted the night before. Yet, he had never painted it like this, because he had never been this far down, or reached this far up.
After a breakdown, Vincent had committed himself, of his own will, to an asylum at Saint-Rémy, a former monastery for the mentally ill. He was thirty-six years old. From the window of his room, behind iron bars, he could see a wheatfield and a strip of sky. He described it to his brother Theo like a man who had found something to hold onto:
"Through the iron-barred window I can make out a square of wheat in an enclosure, above which in the morning I see the sun rise in its glory."
Out of that view, that narrow slot of world seen from inside a mental institution, he made one of the most famous paintings that has ever existed. The night sky rolls and swirls like a living sea, eleven stars and a blazing crescent moon burn and turn in currents of blue, the whole heavens surging with a force that feels almost too large for the canvas to hold...
Vincent had trained as a preacher once, and though he had long since broken with the church, he never stopped reaching for something larger than himself. He had once written Theo a line that explains this whole painting:
"I have a tremendous need for, shall I say the word, religion. So I go outside at night to paint the stars."
That is what he was doing here: reaching for the divine the only way he had left, with a brush and a sky full of light. He made it locked away, ill, and more alone than he had ever been, and instead of despair he gave us what may be the most beautiful thing anyone has ever painted.
The lower he sank, the higher his work climbed, until he turned the view from a barred asylum window into the closest thing we have to heaven.
And if he was right, if death really is only the train we take to reach a star, then somewhere out past the swirling blue he painted from that cell, Vincent finally made the journey he was always looking up toward...

Vincent van Gogh painted almost a thousand pictures in his life but he sold only one. And he never lived to find out that he would become one of the most famous artists who ever lived...
The painting he sold is called The Red Vineyard, made in Arles in 1888. It shows workers gathering grapes in a vineyard at sunset. It went for 400 francs, roughly two thousand dollars in today's money, at an exhibition in Brussels in early 1890.
The buyer was a Belgian painter and collector named Anna Boch, the sister of Van Gogh's friend Eugène Boch. Some believe she bought it partly out of solidarity, because his work had been mocked and dismissed, and she wanted him to have one small win.
That sale happened just months before his death in July 1890. He was thirty-seven and he had spent his life supported almost entirely by his brother Theo, convinced he was a burden, selling nothing, watching his paintings pile up unwanted in a world that had no use for them.
After his death, within a few decades, the man who sold a single canvas for 400 francs became one of the most beloved and valuable artists in human history. His Portrait of Dr. Gachet later sold for over 80 million dollars. His Irises for nearly 54. The Red Vineyard itself now hangs in the Pushkin Museum and no price could buy it.
Yet he died believing he had failed.
He once wrote something that says everything about a life spent making things no one wanted:
"What am I in the eyes of most people? A nonentity, or an eccentric, or a disagreeable person. Well then, I should want my work to show what is in the heart of such an eccentric, of such a nobody."
His work would go on to move the whole world, and he is the only one who never got to see it...
If we are now performing open-heart surgery on babies in the womb, then they are certainly PATIENTS. All patients have rights, and abortion seeks to intentionally kill my patients.
HEALTHCARE includes life-saving surgeries on the preborn.
Abortion is NOT healthcare.
