Off-topic from the cars, but it's still a build!
I got tired of my Samsung S89C's home screen being a billboard, so I built my own: a quiet custom home screen with my photography, weather, the house thermostat, and how charged the Taycan and Audi are.
It runs as a small custom app on the TV's own operating system (Tizen), standing in for Samsung's home screen. 250 of my photos rotate in the background, and the accent colors change to match each one.
Leave the remote alone for 8 seconds and the tiles disappear, leaving just the photo. Each one gets a small caption with where and when it was shot, read from the photo file. Spotify gets a frosted-glass "now playing" card, and the remote handles play and skip.
How I got in:
β’ Turned on the TV's Developer Mode and pointed it at my Mac
β’ Connected with Samsung's own developer tool (sdb, part of the Tizen SDK)
β’ Used the open-source Quiet Tizen project to get temporary root on this firmware, then removed the ads, viewing tracking and analytics, and TV Plus
β’ Samsung's normal home screen won't load an unsigned web app, so I built a native .NET one and put it in a built-in app's slot
Lessons, same as any build:
β’ Samsung's screensaver kicked in after about 90 seconds no matter what, so I added a tiny helper that keeps the TV awake only while my screen is up
β’ A slow zoom on 1080p photos left a faint grid on the 4K OLED, so I cut the motion
β’ Back up before every change and keep every change reversible

I drove the Nurburgring in 2014 in a race-prepped VW Scirocco.
A crazy mix of pure terror and absolute amazement as 911's and such passed me at 2x my very slow speed. Its by far the craziest track I've ever been on.
An epic memory for sure!
