It all began with the invention of Interactive voice response #IVR systems which was powered by the invention of DTMF tech. By assigning different tones to different digits, DTMF enabled capturing the user choices without needing a human in the loop. The best part of this tech is, it was all done with the existing phone communication rails without any changes required in the phone communication infrastructure.
Today IVR systems may be outdated, but they still remain a cost-effective solution to communicate the customer choices.
However, IVRs biggest problem is the lack of customer-centricity. By forcing customers to listen all options and select the correct option, businesses just moved the responsibility of picking the right option onto customers. This often resulting in frustration, dissatisfaction, and increased churn.
Some notable IVR systems today include Avaya, Genesys, Cisco, Vonage, RingCentral, and 8x8. (1/3)
