People are beginning to notice that some on “the right” share “the left’s” basic desire to sublate* Western civilization. They just prefer to boil the frog slowly, so the transformation looks orderly.

*Sublation here means negating Western civilization as a distinct historical form while preserving and reappropriating the human powers and achievements developed within it. Taken as an whole, (post)Marxist theory sees Western civilization as the historical world in which human capacities have become estranged from the people who produce them and fixed in external forms: property, capital, markets, law, institutions, class structures, inherited categories, and systems of authority. So, human beings create these forms through their own activity, yet the forms come to confront them as independent powers.

Reification is a fancy word that names the hardening of that alienation. Social relations created by human beings acquire the appearance of things with an objective existence and logic of their own. Markets seem to act, capital seems to possess productive power, institutions seem to have necessities independent of the people who sustain them, and historically specific arrangements come to appear natural and permanent. The social world takes on the character of a second nature. Its power is real, but its apparent independence conceals the human activity and human capacities objectified within it.

Critical consciousness is a term that really means having the elevated view that “penetrates that appearance” and sees reality through a left theory lens. So, what normies with an “ordinary consciousness” encounters as fixed reality is reinterpreted as accumulated human activity in alienated form. So, the consciousness-bearing vanguard then sees the real historical relations where normies see natural facts, human powers where others see autonomous systems, and possibilities for transformation where others see necessity. The people with critical consciousness are the vanguard, and their role is to make the alienated character of the existing order conscious and to lead the recovery of the powers embodied within it.

So, you should see the picture of sublation come together now. The vanguard can see how the inherited forms (Western civ) can then be dissolved and their human content reappropriated. Knowledge, productive capacity, cooperation, technology, social coordination, and other accumulated achievements are detached from the alienated relations in which they developed and brought under conscious collective control. They really think they can delete the civilization and keep all the goodies.

The goal then is a higher unity in which powers that once confronted human beings as external forces are recognized and organized as their own common powers. The earlier wholeness of “primitive communism” was immediate and undeveloped and at a low level; the higher wholeness is conscious reintegration back to unity consciousness because it has pased through division, alienation, and historical development. Western civilization disappears as a particular civilizational order, while the human capacities developed through it are preserved, universalized, and reintegrated into a more conscious social whole. So in other words, they feel that they can come back to a unity but at a higher more conscious level.

That entire movement is what is meant by sublation. Capitalism, whiteness, patriarchy, and, zoomed all the way out, Western civilization itself are cast as historical forms of rupture and alienation in which human powers have become estranged, objectified, and reified. Critical consciousness identifies those powers as human creations trapped in alienated forms. The “oppressive” forms are negated, their contents recovered and reappropriated, and the recovered powers reintegrated at a higher level of conscious social unity.
