I completely disagree with claims that US diplomacy on Sudan has fallen short.

Keep two geopolitical realities in perspective: the Red Sea and the Sahel. Both are vital to US and European security.

SAF under Burhan moved forward with Russia over a naval base on Sudan’s Red Sea coast, overlooking a maritime corridor through which roughly 15% of global trade passes. Now combine the implications of a Russian military presence there with the potential re empowerment of the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood.

Who exactly would be safe from the consequences?

Egypt considers the Muslim Brotherhood a national security threat, yet supports Burhan while Sudanese Islamist networks remain influential within his camp. Does Cairo seriously believe that an empowered Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood directly across its southern border would remain Sudan’s problem?

Saudi Arabia faces the same contradiction. Supporting Burhan may serve short term interests, but indirectly strengthening the Islamist networks around him could create a far greater regional security problem tomorrow.

Then look west towards the Sahel, already plagued by jihadist organisations exploiting instability, weak states and conflict. Stability there is vital to Europe. Safer states, functioning institutions and economic opportunities mean fewer civilians forced into displacement and dangerous migration routes towards Europe.

Now return to US diplomacy.

Washington has designated the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organisation. So what exactly has Burhan done to demonstrate his separation from it?

Where is the dismantling of its armed networks? Where is its removal from military and political influence?

Instead, Burhan continues turning towards Qatar, Turkey, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Algeria and Eritrea for political, diplomatic or military support. Even where some of these countries officially oppose the Muslim Brotherhood, supporting Burhan indirectly strengthens the Sudanese Islamist networks operating within and alongside his military camp.

That is the contradiction.

Sudan sits between the Red Sea and the Sahel. What happens there will not remain inside Sudan.

Egypt, Saudi Arabia and others may believe they are protecting their interests today.

They should seriously ask themselves what they are empowering tomorrow.

Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces is considering withdrawing thousands of fighters deployed in Saudi Arabia following public criticism from Riyadh at the United Nations, according to sources cited by Darfur24.

Mohamed Abdel Wahid Nour says it plainly: since the 1989 Islamist coup, the Sudanese Army has been controlled by the Muslim Brotherhood. You did not enter the military academy because you wanted to serve Sudan. If you wanted to become an officer, you had to be part of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Nour also says he rejected Saudi Arabia’s attempt to buy his support with money and bring him into the ranks of the Muslim Brotherhood’s army and its allied militias to fight the RSF.

That tells you what this war is really about. This is the Muslim Brotherhood’s war to take Sudan back. The question is not just who controls the guns. It is who gets to control Sudan, and if the Sudanese people will finally get a chance to break free from the Muslim Brotherhood, who have held this country hostage since 1989.

It was the Port Sudan authorities who used chemical weapons in Sudan, making affected areas dangerous for human life while causing potentially devastating harm to animals, plants and the wider environment.

The United States formally determined that the Government of Sudan used chemical weapons in 2024 and subsequently imposed sanctions.

Calling out the MB or rejecting jihadist ideology doesn't require a different Quran. It requires recognizing that Islam isn't owned by the MB, jihadists, or anyone else who claims to speak for all Muslims.

With these migrants, the danger to Europe from Islamism increases more and more as they come from a Muslim Brotherhood-controlled area and a conflict zone.

The Muslim Brotherhood and its allies Islamist states are very interested in sending more and more Islamists to Europe to spread their Islamist extremism.

Sudan as an Islamist hotbed is a problem for the West and it is the in the West’s best interest to stop the civil war in Sudan and stop the Islamists from getting control over Sudan and other countries in the Middle East.

And the Islamists in Sudan are getting help from other Islamists.

Left is Clash Report, a Turkish outlet, as my FDD colleague and Turkey expert @SinanCiddi showed. Its Post goes along these lines: Sudan's RSF is ultimate evil. RSF is associated with Israel and the UAE. This evil alliance has nefarious imperial schemes across the region and Islamic Turkey is countering it.

Right is Turk Press, an Arabic service by the Bayraktar media empire (owned by the in laws of Erdogan's daughter). Here, Turk Press says out loud that Turkey is arming SAF to counter the other alliance. The article also says that Turkey is doing it because Sudan's Red Sea coastline is strategically important for the rising Islamic empire of Turkey (what's good for Sudan comes second).

Note that UN Security Council has a (theoretical) arms embargo against exporting any arms to Sudan.

But Turkey makes the case that its side is legitimate and should win, and that the other side is evil. And Nick Kristof and many in the West inexplicably take the side of Islamist Turkey and its allies in Sudan and across the region, only Because RSF fights like a tribe, either kills (everyone) or get killed. Almost all wars in the Mideast are fought this way.

Saudis and Turks try to argue that SAF is the legitimate army and state while RSF is a non-state actor, and therefore illegitimate. This argument is a incorrect because both SAF and RSF formed Sudan's armed forces, constitutionally, under Omar Bashir. The two generals ousted Bashir, then ousted his civilian successors, then had a fallout, after which SAF "amended the constitution" and declared RSF non-state outlaw actor.

This was the final journey of Sudan’s bloody dictator Jaafar Nimeiri as president. Omar al-Bashir, the Muslim Brotherhood’s war criminal, is gone too. And Al-Burhan, intoxicated by power and hiding behind hypocrisy, will go as well.

What I still struggle to understand is this: you seize power via a coup, without a mandate from the people or parliament, but when others attempt to overthrow you, you respond with bloodshed instead of political compromise.

We may disagree with the communists, but the events of July 22, as the Sudanese communist leader Suad Ahmed Ibrahim once said, left a wound that never heals. Then came the tragedy of 29 Ramadan, followed decades later by the massacres at the sit-in outside military headquarters under Al-Burhan.

A coup may put you in power, but it does not give you legitimacy. And it never gives you the right to spill blood.
