The Letter T
He woke to hot shafts of sunlight pouring over him from a small window set just under the ceiling. His tiny room was tucked beneath the roof, in the attic. There was no furniture in it, no door; the walls and floor were padded with a thick layer of foam and covered in white satin printed with a scatter of little flowers. He lay on the floor, savoring the morning. He was about thirteen.
Suddenly one wall swung open and his mother said, “Come and have breakfast, sunshine.”
Those were the happiest moments. He would burst out of his room at a run and tear headlong down the stairs of their huge, luxurious house.
He often went with his parents to receptions and society events. Over the years it grew easier to keep himself within the rules. But there was one peculiarity: he saw the world through a glass triangular prism. Often he would set his thumbs and index fingers before his eyes in the shape of a triangle, sharp angle upward, and look into his own world. Everything outside the triangle blurred and dropped out of sight.
Because of this, strange things happened to him, and sometimes funny ones.
Once he and his parents went to a reception at a great palace and walked for a long time along red carpets, through halls and corridors, toward the throne room.
He said to his mother, surprised, “Mama, how are the doors made here, that they open by themselves when we come up?”
“The footmen open them,” his mother explained, without turning around.
He did not understand the explanation, and soon forgot the question as well.
When they reached the throne room, it was already full of guests—evening gowns, tuxedos, costly jewels. But he saw only their shoes and the trains of their dresses; the rest did not fit inside his triangle. He and his parents were moving toward the hosts of the palace to greet them, and those were the ones he saw before his eyes.
Many years passed. He learned very well how to turn his peculiar view through the triangle to use in adult life. It even helped him: it cut away everything and everyone unnecessary. He saw only what mattered—the core of a problem, or the key person. Everything else stayed blurred.
“You’re sometimes too hard on your employees,” a friend told him once.
“Sometimes I simply don’t see them,” he answered honestly.
The candor left his friend stunned.
Thanks to that peculiarity and to certain family connections, he rose quickly in business. Soon he himself was often at receptions and banquets.
One day the phone rang.
“Good afternoon.”
“Good afternoon.”
“You are invited to a meeting with the President.”
And the line went dead. Happiness made him want to fly out the door and tumble down the stairs the way he had as a child.
He went to the reception with restraint, well dressed, fully composed. The office door opened, and suddenly… his triangle flipped upside down.
Now he saw the world far more widely.
The President’s figure fell inside the overturned triangle, set cleanly beneath its upper edge, and suddenly he saw before him the letter T.
Yes. This was what would turn not only his world. Now he knew for certain: this was what would turn the Universe.
