Here are 5 watering rules that will transform how your garden grows:
1. Water the soil, not the leaves. Plants drink through their roots. Aim at the base of the plant and soak the ground - not the foliage. Dry leaves also mean fewer diseases.
2. Slow soaks beat quick sprinkles. A fast spray only wets the top of the soil. Water slowly so moisture reaches a few inches down where the roots actually are.
3. Fewer, deeper waterings beat daily sips. Watering a little every day creates shallow, lazy roots. Try two to three deep waterings per week instead - your plants will be stronger and more drought-resistant.
4. Use the right tool for your space. Watering can for containers, soaker hose for raised beds, drip irrigation for larger gardens. Simple and efficient beats fancy every time.
5. Water in the morning, never at night. Morning watering gives plants a full drink before the heat sets in and lets leaves dry off quickly. Wet leaves overnight invite disease and fungus.
