2024 was a great year for horror: The First Omen, Abigail, I Saw the TV Glow, Under Paris, In a Violent Nature...

But there didn't seem to be much love for Arcadian, a tense and brutal horror flick with really interesting (and initially anatomically discombobulating) creature designs.

It was directed by Benjamin Brewer who was also FX creative director for the movie. Brewer was also the lead visual effects artist for the absolutely marvellous and pretty much universally acclaimed Everything Everywhere All at Once.

I highly recommend Arcadian. It really is a bit of an unsung gem.

• Russian officials wanted to ban the film in 2024 amid the invasion of Ukraine and deemed its themes of censorship too dangerous.

• It still became the highest-grossing 18+ release in Russian history.

• Based on Mikhail Bulgakov’s acclaimed satirical novel, the film follows a writer in 1930s Moscow, who after being censored, writes a new novel in which the Devil appears to wreak havoc on those who have wronged him.

過去作です。幼稚園冊子の表紙。奥に居るロボットの横長の顔という発想は、小林誠先生の『ドラゴンズヘブン』のエルメダインから大きな影響を受けました。もちろん幼児向け作品として自分なりに再構成したものですが、今でもあのデザインの衝撃は忘れられません。
