In spite of the obvious problems with growing up inside a religious cult, one thing I am grateful for is that being raised as a Jehovah Witness forced me to become comfortable with always being the weirdo, the loner, and the odd one out.

When the entire school assembly is singing the national anthem or reciting the pledge or singing from the blue S.O.P. book, and you have to stand right there in the middle of everyone everyday, silent and arms down, with your mates and teachers indignantly looking at you like horns are growing out of your head, and you have this experience every day of your life until you turn 17, this either breaks your brain and sets you up for a lifetime of mental illness, or it toughens you exponentially and makes you get used to being alone and doing your own thing whether other people approve or not.

When you carry around a legal document signed by your parents inside your wallet that states that if you injure yourself in the playground or you are involved in an accident during a school trip and you need a blood transfusion, the doctor should let you die instead of giving you blood, this forces your brain to work in a number of interesting ways as a child. Unlike your mates at school who are still on autopilot and blindly trust every authority figure around them, you start asking yourself like I did at around age 7, "Are my parents completely insane?" "Do my teachers even understand what is happening here?" "Why am I in this situation and everyone either acts like it is my fault, or they act like everything is OK and there is no giant purple elephant in the room?" "Why are some words in a 'Holy Book' written 2,000 years ago the reason why my parents always need to sign an indemnity release form before the school will let me run my 3rd leg in the 4x100m invitational relay?"

You learn at a very young age to become psychologically self-contained. You become your own best friend, your most dedicated hater, your own biggest fan, your own harshest critic - because you realise that you cannot trust ANYONE around you, including your own family. You learn that your mind is a very big place, and you learn how to devour vast amounts of reading and visual material to enable to explore it, because your mind is the only place where you can truly be free. You learn to think at a speed 1.5x - 2x that of the "normal" people around you, because your speed of thought is the difference between surviving everyday with your carefully curated defensive mechanisms intact, and ending up in a psych ward or a pine box.

Most importantly, even after leaving the cult later, you are able to take those unusual skills and abilities you built up from your years of psychological isolation, and transfer them to the adult you have consciously built yourself into. And I think that's what really unsettles so many people about me, even though they can't really put their finger on it. Most of you grew up inside the safe confines of trusted authority, and as adults your minds are still as limited and conditioned as they were in primary school. But when you read and listen to me, you get the terrifying sense of a person who represents pure, distilled chaos because he genuinely and truthfully broke through the wall of not giving a fuck about your society or its arbitrary rules 28 odd years ago.

And that scares you.

Build your wealth without noise, and let your prosperity make news. And while building wealth, don't pray for life to get easier. Pray that you become stronger. Don't pray not to face trial. Pray to grow by overcoming trials. Don't pray for your enemy to die (that is evil). Pray for your foes to live long enough to see you overcome the vicissitudes they unleashed on you.
