Probably one of the sadder things to watch in the Australian casual culinary sphere is the slow disappearance of genuine cultural icons such as milk bars, fish and chips shops, Vietnamese bakeries, (real) Mediterranean delicatessens, and other tuck shop varieties, and in their place we get soulless knock-off Americana, particularly in the western suburbs of Sydney and Melbourne.

This has reached what I think is an apex with the opening of 'Paddy Chans' in Newtown, where punters are paying $75 for an 'Irish spice box', which is similar in nature to a munchies box, available in the UK for maybe £10-20. It's an assortment of fried shit and genuinely terrible Chinese, in a pizza box. Australia for the mostpart always had a decent standard of Chinese food due to early migration dating back to gold rush eras, so the desire for this is nothing short of surprising.

The loss of this cultural identity is sadly driven by the taste of the consumer more than anything, and the desire to line up for the most glib garbage of the day is probably the saddest indictment on the people of our major cities.
