1/2 WHY LINDSAY CLANCY? — LOOK AT WHAT’S BEING AMPLIFIED

Something about the Lindsay Clancy trial deserves a closer look — and I’m not talking about whether she is guilty or whether her defense is valid.

I’m talking about MEDIA AMPLIFICATION.

For weeks, the Lindsay Clancy case has become a massive national story. Major outlets are covering virtually every development. AP describes it as a case drawing national attention. ABC says it has “captured the public’s attention.” People is publishing story after story. Fox News has repeatedly devoted television segments and articles to it. The Atlantic just published an entire piece about the extraordinary public obsession surrounding the trial.

But here’s the question:

WHY THIS CASE?

Because during roughly the same period, other mothers have also faced murder trials involving their own young children — without anything remotely resembling this level of national amplification.

🔹 TONI McCLURE — INDIANA
Charged with murdering her 5-year-old daughter, Kinsleigh Welty. Prosecutors allege the severely malnourished child had been confined in a closet. Her June trial ended in a mistrial and her retrial began August 24 — right in the middle of the Clancy media frenzy.

National saturation? Virtually nonexistent compared with Clancy.

🔹 KIANNA DAVIS — GEORGIA
Tried in July for the death of her 2-year-old son, Karter. She testified. The jury couldn’t agree. Mistrial.

Again, nothing approaching the Clancy phenomenon.

🔹 CATHERINE HOGGLE — MARYLAND
Accused of murdering her 3-year-old daughter and 2-year-old son. Their bodies have never been found. She spent years considered incompetent to stand trial because of serious mental illness and is now pursuing Maryland’s version of an insanity defense.

Mother. Multiple young children. Mental illness. Insanity defense.

Yet overwhelmingly regional coverage.

So what makes LINDSAY CLANCY different?

Maybe it’s simply the perfect storm of true crime, postpartum mental health and social-media fascination.

But look at what this enormous amplification is simultaneously putting into the national conversation:

💊 PSYCHIATRIC DRUGS.

And this isn’t buried in paragraph 17 of obscure articles.

IT’S BECOMING PART OF THE HEADLINE.

📺 FOX NEWS:
“Lindsay Clancy’s medication history under scrutiny” — specifically highlighting that she had been prescribed 13 psychiatric medications.

📺 FOX — AMERICA REPORTS:
A medical analyst discusses her history of 32 prescriptions involving 13 different psychiatric drugs in four months.

🎙 FOX NEWS RADIO:
An entire segment asks:

“Were Psychiatric Drugs a Factor in the Lindsay Clancy Case?”

📰 BOSTON GLOBE:
Created an entire timeline of Clancy’s prescriptions — 13 different medications and more than 30 prescriptions.

📰 ASSOCIATED PRESS:
Ran a story specifically titled:

“At Lindsay Clancy trial, focus turns to medications prescribed before she killed her 3 children.”

📺 ABC NEWS:
Reported extensively on Clancy’s psychiatric medications, medication changes and her searches concerning drug side effects, hallucinations and psychosis.

📺 CBS:
Coverage specifically discusses SSRIs, including sertraline/Zoloft, while repeatedly reporting the defense contention that Clancy had been overmedicated.

📰 PEOPLE:
Multiple stories have focused on the medication issue — including her psychiatric treatment, alleged overmedication, prescription bottles requested by jurors and allegations of inadequate medical care.

📰 WASHINGTON POST/AP:
Coverage has examined her psychiatrist’s prescribing decisions, the changing mixture of psychiatric drugs and Clancy’s reported concerns about side effects.

And now even STAT has published a commentary pushing back against what its psychiatrist-author describes as the emerging narrative surrounding psychiatric medication.

Think about what that means.

Whether psychiatric drugs ultimately had anything to do with these murders is a completely separate question.
