Just a few hours on and the haze is beginning to clear. The passing of Paul Bird is a seismic shock to the British motorcycle racing scene. The team that bears his name has been the reference for success for over twenty years. The roster of championship and race winners is unrivalled. Above all the relentless sometimes abrasive and utterly obsessive drive for success was the mark of the man. To quote his most successful rider Shane Byrne in a post I’ve just read. Paul needed the paddock as much as the paddock needed him. It was a two way deal. In a bizarre way I still think a message will drop in any second saying “Bossman I told you people would miss me”.
Just four days ago I messaged Birdy in hospital, sending him some pictures of his team celebrating their success at Cadwell. His reply “Thank you for what you do for me.”
The reverse is true, thank you Paul for all what you have done.
The days, months and weeks ahead will be mixed with grief and anxiety and questions about what the future may hold and what the legacy of Paul Bird Motorsport will be.
But right now the racing family comes together to respect and thank Paul Bird. Godspeed my friend.
