USA. A Mexican restaurant. We had not yet ordered anything, and the food was already arriving.
Chips. Salsa. Unrequested. Free.
I stopped the waiter. "We have not earned these."
"They just come with the table, man."
They come with the TABLE. In my land, hospitality is a debt. Every gift creates an obligation, weighed carefully, returned in the proper season with interest of feeling. Here, the gift arrives before you have even proven you can pay for dinner.
This is not an appetizer. This is a declaration: we trust you. Eat.
I ate with the gravity the moment deserved. And then — I must report this calmly — the basket emptied, and a new one appeared.
"Did we…?"
"Refill," the waiter said. "It's bottomless."
Bottomless. They have wells of salsa. The supply lines of this nation are beyond anything my ancestors imagined.
My friend warned me. "Don't fill up on chips, dude."
Too late. I had accepted three baskets. Honor demanded each one be finished — an unfinished gift is an insult. By the time my actual food arrived, I was a ruined man.
I was not hungry. I was not comfortable. I had been defeated by a courtesy.
Generosity that arrives before the request cannot be repaid. It can only be survived.
I know the rule now. I have made my peace with the basket. One basket. Two at the most.
Who am I deceiving. There is no number of baskets I would refuse. The trust of a nation is in that salsa, and I intend to honor all of it.

💡For the intellectually honest and curious… but they were probably already doing this anyway. (With their own brains 🧠, but also with AI since its advent.)

@christopherrufo@mcuban Corporate turnarounds don’t need to entail hamhandedly smashing things & flying by the seat of your pants on change management. Better to take drastic measures that are calculated decisions with well thought out plans for smooth transitions. e.g.:

Extraordinarily difficult change management while treating employees with dignity is achievable for leaders faced with the need for a system overhaul. But it doesn’t always go so well. Curious what people think about Grok’s list of success stories.

I’m chairing our 25th HS reunion planning committee and want it to be one for the books. 💪
Our class was massive, so est. a few hundred attendees.
@bethanyjbabcock @405HomeBuyer I think the group I have in mind is or was based out of McKinney Texas, but if you’ve done the same, pleased to meet your acquaintance! That’s awesome.
@bethanyjbabcock @405HomeBuyer The examples I have in mind are on the building operations side. Relatedly, though, I heard a podcast a few years ago featuring a woman in commercial property management who built a property management software solution on top of HubSpot. It was super interesting.
@bethanyjbabcock @405HomeBuyer Oh boy, have I seen that movie. I have seen some incredible CREtech tools (firsthand), so there are definitely brilliant innovators out there, trying their best to serve this industry. Adoption is just painfully slow.
@bethanyjbabcock @405HomeBuyer Yes, true. Interestingly, they’d been actively stoking their Community to foster UGC for years, leveraging their Academy and Partner/Provider ecosystem to contribute. Guess it wasn’t enough to offset. In any case, I thought they still had considerable awareness & share of voice
