Benue Massacre Survivor Exposes Government Before U.S. Congress, Says Killings Are Hidden While Millions Are Spent on Propaganda

A survivor of the June 2025 massacre in Yelewata, Benue State, Franc Utoo, on January 14, 2026, appeared before members of the United States Congress, bringing renewed international attention to what he described as the systematic targeting of Christian communities in Nigeria.

Speaking from a meeting room inside the U.S. House of Representatives, Utoo delivered emotional testimony before an audience that included U.S. lawmakers, State Department officials, policy advisers, nonprofit leaders, and members of the international press.

His appearance comes amid growing concern in Washington over religious violence and insecurity across Nigeria’s Middle Belt.

During his address, Utoo accused the Nigerian government of deliberately minimizing and misrepresenting the scale of attacks against Christians, insisting that official narratives from Abuja do not reflect the ongoing killings, displacement, and destruction of rural Christian communities.

He told U.S. lawmakers that while villages are being attacked and families displaced, the Nigerian government has chosen to focus on managing international perception rather than protecting lives.

Utoo sharply criticized the Office of the National Security Adviser, headed by Nuhu Ribadu, over the reported use of $9 million in Nigerian public funds to hire a U.S.-based lobbying firm, DCI Group, through a Kaduna-based intermediary, Aster Legal.

The contract, signed in December 2025, reportedly includes an initial $4.5 million six-month retainer, with provisions for renewal.

According to filings with the U.S. Department of Justice, the lobbying effort is aimed at portraying Nigeria as actively addressing religious violence and reassuring U.S. policymakers of government action.

Utoo told lawmakers the move amounts to an attempt to create an illusion of peace, even as attacks on Christian communities continue unabated.

He warned that image laundering abroad cannot replace security at home, stressing that Christians in affected regions remain vulnerable while the government spends millions to polish its reputation overseas.

The testimony adds to mounting pressure on Nigeria’s authorities, as U.S. lawmakers continue to scrutinize the country’s handling of religious violence and the humanitarian consequences unfolding in the Middle Belt.
