Chiral gliding: cyanobacteria move straight in water, but steer right on dry surface. A navigation strategy? With @Lei_La_, Stefano Villa and Vahid Nasirimarekani from @mpids. Just out in @PNASnews. https://t.co/PQXdOhjz9W
What is the energetic cost of erasing information by mixing? The optimal shear protocol turns out to be determined by the trajectory of a non-linear pendulum. By Luca Cocconi, @YihongShi_ and @AndrejVilfan, from @mpids and @JSI_SLO.

We are pleased to announce that the upcoming conference, “Emergence and Self-organization in Biological Systems” (ESBS 2025), will be held at the Arnold Sommerfeld Center in the Physics Department of LMU Munich from August 18 to 22, 2025.
Experiments with #bacteria show that, collectively, bacterial colonies exhibit chiral flows along the external boundaries of the colony. Similar but counter-clockwise flows formed along internal boundaries.

Erich Sackmann passed away. He was among the founding fathers of modern biophysics whose work influenced several generations. A fine man and a dedicated scientist.
How efficient is propulsion by interfacial surface tension gradients? Abdallah Daddi-Moussa-Ider, @RGolestanian & @AndrejVilfan derive an analytical theorem for the minimum dissipation, placing Marangoni surfers among the most efficient microswimmers.
