@SierraGeology@coconinoite I would also be interested to attend the next field trip on vintage railcars to view the Sierra foothills Mesozoic and Tertiary units.
@whoiskatrin London is spectular, so is San Francisco and many other places in the world. For me the best place in the World is wherever I am at that point in time.
@AbigailHudak hard to identify rocks from pics, but knowing the area is volcanic, I would say the platy structure was formed by contraction during cooling. The structure is generally parallel to the surface of cooling, since the structures are near vertical, the rocks have been overturned.
@MiekeDocx Glad you are back riding. It is difficult to find a successful athlete that has not broken collar bone, or separated shoulder at least once π
@virginiahanusik Interesting. I am thinking that the photo was probably taken somewhere in the southern part of the Hudson Valley (somewhere south of Hudson). And maybe the artist depiction on paper was of somewhere north of Hudson, like maybe Albany or even further north?
@greenwoodae and yes Miocene, I do not know the location of that volcano but you said 8 million years ago, so yes it likely was revegetated sometime during Miocene.
@greenwoodae Yes, the birds, rodents and wind can carry the seed to areas where seeds were fully destroyed by the volcano. This can happen really quickly (in geologic time) depending on the type of volcano and the magma.
@greenwoodae Cool video. Volcanic eruptions are destructive. Magma can contain Si, Fe, Mg, Ca, K and Na, so the soil from weathering volcanic rx and ash is often rich in nutrients. This soil fertility bolsters vegetation, aiding in the recovery of an ecosystem after an explosion.
@abbylexisalinas A part of me loves Texas. I spent 2.5 years there, and would not trade that time for anything. But I am also glad to be back home now.
@natalie_kovarik Well maybe not better, and not my first experience, but I cannot eat lamb without remembering many hard days of work in the mountains of northern Nevada for exploration ending with lamb dinner at a Basque resturant with snow capped mountains in background.
