A woman who worked at Woolworths in Montana reportedly impressed a travel company owner with her kindness, professionalism and the way she treated customers.

He regularly saw her helping customers with a smile, making them feel welcome and going the extra mile. When a Travel Consultant and Travel Administrator position became available at VW Travel & Tours, he remembered her outstanding customer service.

He approached her Woolworths manager and asked for permission for her to attend the interview during her lunch break. A car was arranged to take her to the interview and bring her back.

“Justice Cannot Be Harsh for the Poor”—ATM Questions Why the Corrupt Eskom Contractor Avoided Jail Time Comparing His R745m Eskom Case With Cat Matlala’s R228m Tender and NSFAS’ Sibongile Mani

The African Transformation Movement (ATM) has questioned the suspended sentence handed to former Eskom contractor Michael Lomas after he pleaded guilty to offences linked to the R745 million Kusile Power Station contract. The ATM said it respects judicial independence but questioned whether justice is being applied equally, particularly when sentencing outcomes differ depending on the circumstances of an accused.

The organisation compared Lomas’ sentence with that of Sibongile Mani, a young Black student who unlawfully spent approximately R800 000 after millions of rands were mistakenly deposited into her student account. Mani did not manipulate a government tender or bribe public officials, yet she was initially sentenced to five years’ direct imprisonment before the sentence was reduced on appeal. The ATM asked, “Would an ordinary Black accused person have received the same mercy?”

The ATM also cited former police officer Raymond Kabe, who received five years’ direct imprisonment for corruption involving R2 000, and Eastern Cape businessman Thanduxolo Poswa, who received an effective 10-year sentence for theft and money laundering involving R500 000. It further referenced the Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala matter involving a R228 million SAPS tender, where an effective eight-year sentence was rejected as too lenient. The ATM asked how an eight-year sentence could be considered too lenient in that matter while a suspended sentence was considered appropriate in a case linked to a R745 million Eskom contract.

The ATM acknowledged that courts consider factors including age, health, guilty pleas and other mitigating circumstances when imposing sentences. However, it questioned why Lomas’ health, which had previously been raised during his extradition proceedings, should now justify keeping him out of prison. “We are not suggesting that every difference in sentencing automatically proves racial discrimination,” the organisation said. It called on the National Prosecuting Authority to explain its position on the sentence and consider any available legal remedies, stressing: “Justice cannot be harsh for the poor and merciful for the privileged.”
