@AxiomAmerican Reaching a bit. Humans are certainly NOT as religious as ever, though if "shared higher purpose" qualifies then there is something to your point. While a deity is not necessary, a purpose transcendent to lived reality is pretty close to religious. That is a motive of protesters.
@2Philosophical_@PhilosopherJoeC What if the circumstance was he was hypnotized to behave so? But yes it seems this idea of circumstance would mean everything down to existence of pain receptive neurons, a conscious experience of what's happening (abortion issue), which leaves the "per se" floating off.
@alancolquhoun1 Interiority is a learned bodily behavior. Infants express their intentions visually with no mediation or inferences involved in understanding them. Only later do we learn we can "wear" a smile at odds with a sad interior monologue going on.
@SophiaCycles These are largely genetic traits. A fearful disposition can be a product of trauma, but is mostly just an important adaptive trait to keep you from dying or losing social status. Cooperation expands through successful deployment but is also genetic.
@thomaesplendor Sounds like you are assuming collective good ("for man" that is "ordered") rather than finding it in human nature, the social relationships that evolved for genetic success (where even the most powerful individual loses all hope if kicked out of the tribe).
@thomaesplendor Lost me at "respecting the nature of the work"? Thought you were invoking human nature to say that where power (employer) achieves consent below an amount the employee can live on, then a common, tribal good is sundered. Domination invites revolt, subverts any social contracting.
@EPoe187 A proper time horizon is not in how far the mind can stretch but in the organic processes that bear us along: the mature self finds love, has children, hands-off meaning (tradition) and is remembered. "Because we are in the world, we are condemned to meaning" - Merleau Ponty.
@SchopenhauerNow Horrendous mistake to take conscious existence as the essence of "you". Yes, consciousness comes to an end, but you ARE a body and an emergence in a wider world. People will have to deal with your body (different than pre- birth) but you will now also be memories transcending.
@Cernovich I remember that anxiety very well. Researching to the point of sleep deprivation to support arguments and then looking at what I wrote and wondering if it hadn't come from something I'd read 3 days before and had actually cited in some previous draft.
@IonaItalia I think the ambivalence is something genuinely experienced, so the plausible deniability isn't the calculated kind. Every teenager is a radical in similar fashion (at least in relation to parents) and its the same frisson of not knowing where it dangerousness will end up.
@ChikuChill Correct that subject and object are not separate. We are (conscious) bodies that sense other bodies (the world). Objective reality is not a "projection" so much as a precipitate of the process of thematically organizing and slicing things off from the whole.
