The version of japa nobody shows you online.

The first year is often lonely, cold, and humbling.

The doctor who becomes a care assistant for a while. The engineer retaking exams to requalify. The proud person learning to ask for help in an accent people pretend not to understand.

This is not to discourage you. It is to prepare you.

The people who thrive abroad are not the ones who expected it to be easy. They are the ones who expected it to be hard, planned for it, and refused to quit in month three when the excitement wore off.

Go if you must go. Many should.

But go with a skill the new country pays for, a buffer of savings, and a spine ready for a difficult season.

Relocation rewards the prepared and punishes the desperate.

Prepare, then fly.

I saw a job advert requesting a Master’s degree or PhD, alongside a good academic record. Applicants were also required to have no more than two years of relevant full-time work experience, while extracurricular activities and/or voluntary work were considered an advantage.

A friend explained to me that some entry-level roles in developed countries require a Master’s degree or PhD, unlike what we typically see here in Nigeria.

In some developed countries, a Master’s degree serves a role similar to what our Bachelor’s degree serves in Nigeria.

This also reminded me of when Dr Michael Taiwo shared how he got into Shell through a career fair. If I remember correctly, he had just completed his PhD programme at the time.

It makes me wonder how much our understanding of “entry-level” roles differs across countries. A role can be entry-level in terms of work experience while still requiring an advanced academic qualification.
