28 years ago, a handful of absolute legends at VIE (Virgin Interactive Entertainment) created **SubSpace** — one of the first online multiplayer games *ever made*. Before your Battle Royales. Before your MOBAs. Before matchmaking was even a word. Just pure, unhinged 2D space combat with a dial-up modem and a prayer.

🫡 Massive shoutout to **Juan Vargas**, **Jeff Petersen**, **Rod Humble**, and everyone at **VIE & Harmless Games** who built something so ahead of its time that people are STILL playing it decades later. You didn't just make a game — you made a cult.

## A Personal Note from the Dev

I was one of the first players of the original SubSpace. Callsign: **DeathDude**.

The whole office used to play. *Everyone* was named Death-something. DeathDude, DeathBlade, DeathStar, DeathWish — we were basically a grim reaper convention with internet access. Lunch breaks turned into hour-long wars. "One more game" was the biggest lie we told ourselves and our managers.

One thing that always **sucked** about SubSpace? You couldn't persist your ship. You'd spend *hours* grinding up to a 4,000 bounty — dodging, fighting, surviving — and the second you logged out? Gone. All of it. For nothing. Every session started from zero. It was the most beautifully painful game loop ever designed.

I never forgot that feeling. **Subspace: Bounty Hunters** exists because of it.

## What We Built (and What Inspired It)

Everything we've added was inspired by the games that got persistence and progression *right* — **World of Warcraft**, **World of Tanks Blitz**, and others that understood: *players should keep what they earn.*

**Subspace: Bounty Hunters** takes the original SubSpace formula and modernizes it:

### 💾 Ship Persistence (Finally.)
Your ship, your XP, your rank, your gear — it all **saves**. Log off as an Ensign with an Epic cannon and 2,000 bounty? It's all there when you come back. No more losing hours of progress to a logout. *It only took 28 years.*

### 📈 XP & Military Ranks
Earn XP from kills and climb the ranks:

> Ensign → Lieutenant → Commander → Captain → Major → Colonel → Admiral → Fleet Admiral → Grand Admiral → Supreme Commander → **FAFO** (Level 100)

Yes. That's the real rank name. No, we're not changing it.

### ⚔️ Battlegrounds & Arenas
WoW-style instanced PvP. Queue up. Get matched. Fight.
- **Battlegrounds** — CTF, team objectives, 5v5 / 10v10 / 20v20 chaos with safe zone respawns
- **Arenas** — Small-scale deathmatch. No safe zones. No mercy. Pure skill (or pure luck, we don't judge)

### 🎰 6-Tier Loot System
Inspired by WoW's color-coded loot because dopamine is dopamine:
- ⬜ **Common** — Your birth certificate has higher value
- 🟢 **Uncommon** — Slightly less embarrassing
- 🔵 **Rare** — People might stop laughing
- 🟣 **Epic** — You can finally pretend you're good
- 🟠 **Legendary** — The server calls you daddy
- 🟡 **Artifact** — 0.5% drop rate. Good luck. You'll need it.

### 🔫 Server-Authoritative Multiplayer
No more "my internet is just laggy bro" cheating. 30Hz tick rate. Binary protocol. Anti-cheat baked into the architecture. Your excuses don't work here.

### 🤖 AI Bounty Hunters
Server-side bots that patrol, chase, and flee. They WILL kill you. They don't care about your feelings. They exist so you have something to die to while the real players are offline.

### 💀 Bounty System
Kill players, steal their bounty. Get killed, lose your bounty. The economy runs on tears. *But at least your ship persists now.*

### 🌐 Runs in Your Browser
No download. No install. No 47GB update. Three.js + WebSockets + Go server + pure chaos. Open a tab, pick a callsign, and start dying immediately.
