Cynicism feels like wisdom, but it's usually just a way of protecting yourself from disappointment. The problem is that it also shields you from hope, and from the kind of vulnerability that real faith and human connection require.
@HeatCulture13 2020 Win the Bubble. Jimmy and Dragic would've been champs
2011 James ruining another great Finals for Wade
2014 Having no answers/losing 3 peat hurt. Spurs were beautiful tho
2023 if we had beat BOS in 5 & had a chance this would hurt more bc Jimmy. But we had no chance
Too many Christians are getting their theology from public apologists, who make it their aim (and get paid for) staying on top of every single cultural event, controversy, and political debate. This means they spend MORE time studying the culture than they do theology or Scripture.
I am a Christian localist, meaning I am a practitioner and advocate of biblical localism.
By biblical localism, I simply mean prioritizing the time and place God has put me for His purposes. My focus is on my local church, local friends, local issues, etc. I’m not exclusively “local” in my efforts. But I try to keep my work no lower than 80% local. I find that when I live by that rule, I avoid stupid debates, am exponentially productive, and more happy.
The downside of the internet is how it can seduce you away from the time and place God has planted you. However, its blessing is that I can write extensively for my local context, make slight edits, and publish it for the world to read—all from the comfort of my home. In this way, even a Christian localist can contribute to the larger conversation without betraying their local commitments.
When an issue is brought to me, I like to ask, “How does this affect my local church or community?” If it doesn’t, I follow up with, “Is this worthy of addressing, and do I have space within my 20% margin to address it?” If the answer is no to either question, I simply ignore it.
The last time I posted, I "tweeted." It was August 2021. Life was unraveling in a way, yet reforming in another. I think differently, but the foundation of my thoughts is largely the same. Maybe I'll "post" about them more. Or maybe I won't and I'll see you in three years. 🤷🏻♂️
Most churches are stuck and stagnant because they love talking about doing things, but are ultimately unwilling to change.
Every church wants to reach more people or have more money for ministry. But most want both to magically show up without doing anything different.
