Long before the Toronto Blue Jays reached the World Series in 2025, or even won the title in 1992 and 1993, Canada had another world champion team.
Back in 1877, the London Tecumsehs became Canada's first international interleague baseball champions.
This is their story.

The story of the London Tecumsehs begins one year after Confederation in 1868.
The club was formed that year through the merger of the baseball clubs of Forest City and London. By the early-1870s, the team was developing a rivalry with the Guelph Maple Leafs.

In the 1870s, the team slowly developed a group of talented players and recruited players from the United States including Juice Latham, Fred Goldsmith and Joe Hornung. In 1876, the Tecumsehs joined the Canadian Association of Baseball and won the league title.

In 1877, the team moved to a new park that became Tecumseh Park and joined the International Association. That league included teams from Guelph, Manchester, Rochester, Pittsburgh and Lynn. The Tecumsehs finished at the top of the league with a record of 14-4-2.

The team's home opener attracted 4,000 fans, and many players dominated the league that season. Fred Goldsmith had a record of 14-4 with 193 innings pitched and three shutouts. Having won the league title, they went on to the championship.

The team took on the Chicago White Stockings, the precursor to the Chicago Cubs, who were the National League champs. They defeated Chicago in three straight games to win the interleague international title. This was a very early version of what became the World Series.

Unfortunately, despite high attendance at the start of the season, the Tecumsehs saw their attendance number slowly decline through the season. On Aug. 22, 1878, the team was forced to fold due to insufficient funds and local support. But the team would be back.

In 1888, the Tecumsehs were resurrected. The team lasted one year and folded again. In 1920, the team was again brought back. On Sept. 15, 1920, Ty Cobb and the Detroit Tigers played an exhibition game against the Tecumsehs in London, winning 5-4.

The 1920 London Tecumsehs are considered to be one of the best minor league teams in history. In 1921, the team won the league championship. The team may be gone now, but Tecumseh Park, now Labatt Memorial Park, still stands as the world's oldest baseball grounds.
