Thanks to SCOTUS, the Purdue bankruptcy plan is gone. Good riddance! It was a lousy deal & not just because of releases for the Sacklers and co-conspirators. There were other elements that were even more onerous.
@andrewkolodny mentioned Richard Sackler’s 2001 email saying “We have to hammer on the abusers in every way possible” (an effort to blame the #opioid crisis on "addicts and illegal drug dealers”). See the email here: https://t.co/7dYHs3FLDQ
Interesting @Pharmed_Out podcast on the #opioid crisis with guest @andrewkolodny discussing industry marketing strategies like promoting pseudoaddiction https://t.co/cjhQm7MwQQ
Endo "was one of the worst actors in the opioid crisis" said @andrewkolodny of the Opioid Policy Research Collaborative at Brandeis University. https://t.co/GedDdZ9b9x
5/ And so the company pleads guilty and pays a fine (that will probably amount to less than it earned off its opioids (which includes Percocet) but no executives are held accountable for actions that contributed to thousands of deaths and tens of thousands of cases of addiction.
1/ Endo, the company that made Opana (oxymorphone), was just ordered to Pay $1.5 billion in criminal fines and forfeiture. The company also pled guilty to falsely promoting Opana ER as abuse deterrent. But that was the least of their bad actions.
4/ The American Pain Foundation, one of the most influential pain patient front groups received the bulk of its funding from Endo. See https://t.co/10qv1qcJvM by @charlesornstein
Ketamine is related to PCP. It is NOT similar to psilocybin, LSD & other psychedelics. It's a good drug used in medical settings for anesthesia but the increasing use for depression & other conditions is based on weak evidence and is cause for concern.
Ketamine is NOT a psychedelic. It is a dissociative anesthetic. And it can be addictive. I've treated patients with ketamine use disorder, including a patient with injection use.
Families and friends from my kibbutz and nearby communities who have lost their loved ones or have relatives kidnapped by Hamas (including my family) are experiencing severe trauma, especially families with young children.
We can help them. Please share https://t.co/7ts1gjZl8h
Biden’s efforts to address fentanyl with interdiction & international collaboration and harm reduction are needed and welcome. But for a real drop in OD deaths, MOUD needs to be free and available. Interdiction & naloxone will only get us so far.

I admire my Brandeis colleague @andrewkolodny. He has been active for years raising the alarm about the over-use of opioids. Yesterday the importance of his work was backhand-acknowledged via a very specific protest against him from a group of “pain patient activists”.
