Ukrainians declared their future as a free nation 33 years ago today. But that independence — and the democracy and the freedom it brought — was never accepted by some.

When Putin invaded Ukraine — when he unleashed bombs, tanks, and troops on a sovereign nation — every nation had a choice: to stand for freedom, or to watch it fall.

Canada never saw it as a choice. It’s who we are. We’ve stood with a free, independent Ukraine always — first to recognize their nation, and then to defend it.

So, we trained Ukrainian fighter pilots. We brought together allies and froze $50B in Russian assets — and put that money to work for Ukraine. We sent Canadian-made light armoured vehicles to the front lines.

Because this is our fight. Ukraine isn’t just fighting for their independence. They’re fighting for everything Putin wants to destroy: freedom, democracy, prosperity.

The proud Ukrainians who’ve settled in Canada — the largest diaspora outside Europe — remind us that Ukraine is not a ‘far away, foreign land’. It’s our ally, our friend, and for many Canadians, it is home.

Today, Ukrainians in Canada and across the world celebrate their independence — even as some defend it with their lives.
