JOE NAMATH "RETIRES"
Less than five months after his team's shocking upset of the Colts in Super Bowl III, and facing a suspension stemming from an FBI investigation into gambling and criminal activity at his NYC restaurant/bar — Bachelors III, #Jets quarterback Joe Namath refuses to sell his stake in the restaurant and tearily "retires" from pro football.
#NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle had given Namath 24 hours to sell his stake in Bachelors III or face an immediate suspension. Namath refused.
Flanked by Pat Summerall, Frank Gifford, Kyle Rote, and Howard Cosell, Joe announces his sudden retirement in a press conference.
Namath would eventually divest himself of his stake in the club and "unretire" six weeks later.
