12-year-old Jacob Freytes was fatally struck by a stray bullet outside a Bronx bodega.

The son of a retired NYPD detective, Jacob had just bought a ball from the shop when police say a gunman opened fire, striking him in the shoulder. He ran back into the bodega, where he later died.

The NYPD arrested 45-year-old William Ferrer in connection to the shooting, he now faces murder, attempted murder, manslaughter, and weapons charges.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani called the killing a "heinous act," as members of the community gathered at a memorial and called for tougher penalties for illegal gun possession, @BryanLlenas reports.
