It's World Mental Health Day.

One of the biggest threats to our mental health is a lack of self-compassion.

We are so desperate for everyone to like and approve us, when we often don't approve of ourselves.

We believe that if we achieve that next big thing, we will be "enough".

Overachievers only pat themselves on the back when they have done something big; like lifting a PB, writing a novel or hitting a career milestone.

But the moment the high fades, the inner critic is back to crack the whip.

Beating the shit out of yourself might work for a short while, but it’s the fuel that destroys the engine.

Lasting meaningful change needs to be driven by self-acceptance.

But how can you be self-accepting without becoming complacent?

By scheduling time to strive for excellence and time to be vulnerable.

Block out time to aim high and be extraordinary.

But also, put time in the calendar to embrace your imperfections:

⁃List what you’re grateful for
⁃Reflect on how far you’ve come
⁃Pat yourself on the back for trying

Don't wait for an annual mental health day to remind yourself that you are enough.
