Os voy a dar un ejemplo fuera del mundo del fútbol y como la corrupción de una entidad puede cambiar vidas para siempre para una industria.

Si tienes menos de 25 años, seguramente no conoces el caso de WorldCom. WorldCom era una enorme empresa de telecomunicaciones en Estados Unidos llegando a ser la segunda mayor compañía de telefonía de larga distancia de Estados Unidos después de su adquisición de MCI en 1998 for $38 mil millones. Por años fue una de las empresas mas adoradas por Wall Street, sus acciones subían como un cohete.

Pero fue un resultado de fraude contable. WorldCom ocultó miles de millones en gastos para inflar artificialmente sus ganancias y el precio de sus acciones. WorldCom registró los costos rutinarios (pagos a otros proveedores de red) como gastos de capital (inversiones a largo plazo). Worldcom en lugar de una ganancia de $10 mil millones los años 2000 y 2001 (lo que informaron en su día en sus cuentas financieras) tuvo una pérdida combinada de $73,7 mil millones entre los años 2000 y 2002 (año en que se declaró en bancarrota).

WorldCom estableció expectativas poco realistas de crecimiento y uso de internet. Competidores como AT&T intentaron igualar estos ritmos ilusorios, lo que puso en grave riesgo su propia salud financiera porque tuvieron que aumentar su deuda para competir. AT&T nunca se recuperó. Su CEO fue despedido por no poder competir con WorldCom (cuantos ejecutivos y entrenadores han sido despedidos de la Premier por no poder competir contra el City?). Mas de 300 mil empleados en la industria quedaron sin trabajo.

Bernie Ebbers, el CEO de Worldcom, fue declarada culpable de fraude y condenada a 25 años de prisión. Murió en 2020, un mes después de salir de prisión.

Me parece apropiado que Ferran Soriano reciba una pena de entre 10-15 años de prisión, y Laporta, entre 15-20 años.

300 sewer workers have died in Delhi in the last 10 years.

Almost none of them were employees of the government they worked for.

They were hired through contractors, which means that when a man dies in a sewer, no department is responsible for him.

A case about that is now in the Delhi High Court.

The petition was filed by an organisation called Dalit Adivasi Shakti Adhikar Manch. It concerns about 2,000 sewer workers engaged by the Delhi Jal Board, the body that runs the capital's water and sewerage.

Here is the arrangement the case is about.

Cleaning and maintaining sewers is a permanent function of the Jal Board. It is not seasonal and it is not temporary. The city needs it every single day.

But the men doing it are not on the Jal Board's rolls. They are hired through contractors.

That word does the work. A contract worker can be paid below minimum wage, according to the petition. No provident fund. No gratuity. No bonus.

And when he dies, the department can say he was never theirs.

The petition asks for 3 things. That the workers be made permanent. That the wages and benefits they were owed be paid. And that the family of every worker who died in a sewer or septic tank receive not less than 1 crore rupees, with a permanent government job for one dependent.

It also asks the court to stop the practice of anyone other than a regular employee being sent into a sewer at all.

Now the part that makes this worse than it already sounds.

Manual scavenging, meaning sending a human being into a sewer or septic tank to clean it by hand, has been prohibited in India since 2013. There is a law with that name.

The Delhi High Court has already ruled on the rights of these workers once before, in an earlier case. The petition says those directions were not followed.

So there is a law. There is a judgment. And there are 300 dead men over 10 years in the national capital.

On 2nd September, a bench of Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia issued notice to the Delhi government and the Jal Board, and told them to collect the data and place complete information before the court.

That instruction is telling in itself. The court had to ask the government how many people it employs to do this, and how many of them have died.

The case is listed for 28th November.
