New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is facing backlash after offering condolences to the family of an inmate who died in city custody without mentioning the murder and robbery charges he faced in connection with the death of a 26-year-old man with special needs.
Prosecutors allege Luis Alberto Lopez Castillo and an accomplice ambushed Ron Marte as he walked home from work in 2025, with the accomplice shooting Marte in the chest while Castillo took his cellphone.
Critics are accusing Mamdani of showing more concern for the accused than the victim, while his office has been contacted for comment.

"I will work with anyone, no matter what party they belong to."
NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani says he's willing to put political differences aside to work with President Trump on making New York City more affordable.
Mamdani says hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers are asking how they can afford to stay in the city, adding that he appreciates his conversations with Trump about "how we can make it easier to afford life" in New York.
The two have previously discussed housing and affordability, even as they remain divided on other major issues.
