Everything you missed from the Yankees’ Game 1 loss, and what matters heading into Game 2:
1. One hit. Twelve strikeouts. A 1-0 loss. The pitching kept handing this lineup another chance and the offense never picked it up. Brutal way to open the series.
2. Cole did his job. Five innings, one run, five strikeouts. His four-seamer averaged 96.8 mph, up from 96.0 in his last start, and touched 98.8. Aranda’s solo homer was the entire difference. You have to give your starter something there.
3. The contact was better than the box score looks. The Yankees hit SEVEN balls at 95+ mph. Six became outs. They weren’t getting rewarded when they did square Rasmussen up.
4. George Lombard Jr. hit balls at 102.0 and 102.3 mph and went 0-for-3. The second traveled 392 feet. Wells (101.7) and Rice (99.2) also lined out to right. How many times did we think one was finally getting down?
5. Still, 12 strikeouts and two walks. Rasmussen got through eight innings on 101 pitches. We can be frustrated about the lineouts AND admit he dominated. The Yankees barely made Tampa Bay use its bullpen.
6. Wells finally broke through with a 107.8 mph double with two outs in the eighth, then got thrown out trying for third. That hurt. You’re already in scoring position down one. Making the final out there took the bat out of the next guy’s hands.
7. Shoutout Ryan Weathers. Nine pitches, three groundouts, scoreless sixth. That’s a useful left-handed option if he can keep giving them quick outs in this series.
8. Weathers, Blackburn and Headrick combined for three hitless, scoreless innings. The bullpen kept the tying run one swing away. A wasted effort from the pitching staff tbh.
9. Cam Schlittler gets Game 2 on Monday at 8 p.m. ET. He had a 1.16 road ERA this season. That’s a pretty good guy to hand the ball to when you need to settle a series down.
10. But Freddy Peralta is waiting: three earned runs in 34 innings over his final six regular-season starts, a 0.79 ERA. Another serious test for these bats. Better contact is encouraging, but Monday needs actual runs.
Get Cam some support. Bring this thing back to the Bronx 1-1.
"The one thing you're going to get with Lombard is that every at-bat is a competitive at-bat" - @KristopherDrew_
George Lombard Jr. has put together some impressive ABs in his early MLB career, and it's exciting to see such a young player manage the zone so well.
