Tressa Burke, the chief executive of the Glasgow Disability Alliance (GDA), publicly rejected an offer of an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) in the New Year 2026 Honours List.

Burke stated she could not accept the personal honor while disabled people were being "dishonoured," "demonised," and "scapegoated" by current government policies.

Burke cited several government actions and policies as reasons for her rejection. She received the MBE notification on the same day the UK Budget was delivered, which she felt "supercharged inequalities" and was a "missed opportunity" to invest in disability services.

She also criticized "draconian" policy changes, including stricter assessments for Personal Independence Payments (PIP) and cuts to the Motability scheme. Additionally, Burke highlighted the lack of funding for adult social care and the regression of disabled people's rights in the UK, citing UN reports.

Key concerns from GDA members #CPW2025 include 1/Benefits or potential benefits cuts 96% rated this and cited UK Gov proposals & Green Paper; 2/ 93% said Money was a concern with reports of ple struggling to pay bills, not being able to heat their homes or afford to eat well.

Disabled people are raising concerns about the Green Paper, benefits cuts and the need for holistic employability support.

Tone around disabled people & benefits must change: @UKGov portrays disabled people opting for "worklessness as a lifestyle choice" & claiming benefits when they should be working. These attempts to blame ill and disabled people are reprehensible and likely to cause hate crime.
