⚠️😦South Africans have been robbed

Yesterday we went for a simple stroll.

Nothing extraordinary. Just my wife, my daughter, me... and "Sputnik" strapped to my wheelchair, hoping it would actually keep my phone in place so I could film.

I'll make another post about the park itself.

Today, I want to talk about something else.

I can't shake the feeling that we were robbed.

Not robbed by a thief in the night.

Robbed one day at a time. Like South African President puts it "Boiling Frogs"

Robbed of the freedom to simply walk without looking over your shoulder.

Robbed of the peace that comes from letting your child run ahead without your heart racing.

Robbed of the little moments that most people don't even realize are precious.

As we rolled through a clean, beautiful park filled with children laughing, then continued through quiet neighborhoods with sidewalks on both sides of the road... houses without towering walls... American flags waving proudly in the breeze...

I had to stop.

I quietly separated myself from my wife and daughter because I could feel the tears coming.

Men are taught to hide them.

Yesterday, I couldn't.

All I could think about was my daughter.

She deserved this kind of childhood all along.

She deserved playgrounds where parents watch their children with smiles instead of fear. Most has been vandalized and is safety hazards, well that's if you could find one

She deserved to ride her bicycle without us wondering if she'd make it home safely.

She deserved to grow up believing the world was full of possibilities instead of precautions.

No child should have their innocence stolen by fear.

That is what breaks my heart.

Today we're incredibly thankful to call America home. Every single day reminds us what a gift safety, freedom, and opportunity truly are.

Sometimes you don't realize how heavy the chains were until they're finally gone.

If you've lived your whole life in America, I hope you never lose sight of what you have. Safe neighborhoods, parks filled with laughter, sidewalks that invite people outside, and the freedom to simply exist without constant fear are priceless blessings.

For many of us, these aren't ordinary things.

They're dreams we carried across an ocean.

I recorded our walk from my point of view. I sped it up a little, but I hope it lets you see what I saw...

Not just a neighborhood.

A future my daughter should have had from the very beginning. ❤️

Over the past several months, I've had the privilege of meeting so many incredible South Africans online. I've watched your journeys, celebrated your victories, prayed through your disappointments, and welcomed many of you as you've begun new chapters in the United States.

You have reminded me that courage isn't the absence of fear. Sometimes it's simply having the faith to pack up your life, leave everything familiar behind, and begin again.

Many Americans do not understand just how different life is in South Africa.

💵 One South African rand is worth roughly six American cents.

That means:

🇿🇦 R100 = about $6
🇿🇦 R1,000 = about $60
🇿🇦 R10,000 = about $600
Those figures may look inexpensive to Americans, but South African salaries are also paid in rand. Families face limited opportunities, high unemployment, violent crime, and enormous economic uncertainty.
This is when my jaw dropped and I was gob smacked, South Africa is officially a constitutional republic, much like the kind of government America was designed to be. But Benjamin Franklin warned us clearly:

"A republic, if you can keep it."

A constitution on paper means very little if people and it's protections are no longer being applied equally.

South Africa's Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) policy uses racial classifications in areas such as business ownership, management, employment, procurement, and government contracting. The government says the policy is intended to address economic inequalities created under apartheid. Many Afrikaners are now disadvantaged by them and their children because of their race.

Then there is the chant:

"Kill the Boer, Kill the Farmer."

Political leader Julius Malema (the devil himself) and his supporters have publicly sung it. Many Afrikaners know these words are a direct threat against their communities, especially in light of ongoing attacks on some farmers. President Cyril Ramaphosa has defended it as part of South Africa's liberation.

Families do not walk away from generations of history, their homes, farms, businesses, churches, family graves, and everything familiar unless they believe they have little choice.

The more Americans learn about South Africa's economy, its policies, and the concerns many Afrikaner families describe, the easier it becomes to understand why some have sought the opportunity to begin again in the United States.

Thank you Kirsten. By winter time I will be able to purchase a coat, boots, scarf, warm tights. I have created a capsule wardrobe, so don't need much. This new chapter calls for keeping things simple. I left so much behind, just brought mostly sentimental items. It was actually liberating to donate what I left to those less fortunate.

I am completely overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity shown to me in such a short time since sharing my story.
