This is an extraordinary development.

MI5 has now accepted in the High Court that evidence provided to three separate courts in the case involving one of its informants was based on lies.

One senior officer has resigned.

Another has been suspended and could face dismissal.

And judges are now considering whether contempt proceedings should follow.

Whatever your view of Britain's intelligence services, there is a fundamental principle at stake here:

If evidence presented to our courts cannot be trusted, who is accountable?

The security services necessarily operate behind a wall of secrecy.

But secrecy cannot mean immunity from scrutiny when the integrity of evidence placed before British judges is called into question.

This deserves answers.
