❤️SHE MATTERS: UNNAMED WOMAN❤️
'No one knows what people are struggling with behind closed doors. Lovely man. Very sad'
'You don't know all the story'
'Maybe it was a mercy killing - who knows?'
These are just a small selection of the comments on social media after a man murdered his 88-year-old mother in her home at Fern Bay, NSW, on December 18.
Thomas Andrew Tapley, 61, is charged with murder (domestic violence)
She is the eighth of nine Australian female victims of male violence confirmed over the past week and the 70th of 71 Australian women killed this year.
The as-yet unnamed woman is the 175th woman killed since January 1 of 2024.
Imagine thinking it is somehow acceptable for a man to kill a woman? Wait. I do not have to imagine it because in almost every femicide I document, people find a way to excuse the killer's actions, to put blame on her and to show us how much of a 'good bloke' he is.
Women rarely get empathy in the wake of their murders.
We really haven't moved the dial on victim-blaming, have we? With the femicide numbers rising year on year, we haven't shifted the dial on male violence either.
As we head closer to Christmas, we are likely to see more femicides. This time of the year, police document significantly higher rates of domestic and family violence - not to mention associate violence and stranger violence.
A Christmas Eve vigil for all women and children killed this year will be held at the She Matters Mural, Hosier Lane, Melbourne, from 5.30pm on December 24.

116 women killed in 14.5 months - this is what our epidemic of violence looks like. This mural was erected in Hosier Lane, Melbourne, over six hours today.
It won't last long. Hosier Lane is a legal street art location and iconic for artists from across the country.
It may last tonight - it may last a week.
The mural sits in Hosier Lane to show the true cost of violence against women on our society and to show how fragile our lives really are - one minute she is with us, the next she is gone.
Thank you Dans Bain and the incredible little team of humans who made this possible.
Next Saturday, we rally at 13 locations across Australia to take a stand against violence. Please join us. The link to the rallies is in my link bio in my profile.

February 1 is the anniversary of Labor's introduction of ten days paid domestic violence leave for every worker in Australia including casuals.
This is saving lives - and it was won by union members.

❤️SHE MATTERS: YVONNE BERES!❤️
It's incredible how the leaders of our country can respond quickly when a sportsperson dies or is injured, and yet they have no sympathy or empathy available for killed women.
The contrast between the public, political and media response to the two people killed during the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race and his response to the three Australian women killed in the past five days could not be more stark - or bleak.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has nothing to say about the killing of women over the Christmas period, and yet he has tonnes of emotional support for the families of the two yachties who passed away.
Clearly, any loss of life is devastating, but when our PM and media find space for sportspeople but not killed women, it's pretty clear where their priorities sit.
We've had more women killed in the past 51 weeks than we have in any of the years I've been documenting femicides - and yet, old mate Albo remains silent about their deaths.
Yvonne Beres may not have taken part in a yacht race - or any other big name sports event - but her life matters - as does her death. She deserves the same level of support as the yachties.
Yvonne's husband allegedly ended her life on Boxing Day at Langwarrin. He is now charged with her murder.
She is the 101st Australian woman killed this year
Yvonne was a mum, an administrative and IT support specialist and a much-loved and respected member of her community.
Yvonne - and all the other women killed this year - may not matter to the men at the top of Australia's power pyramid but she matters to us women down below.

The fucking legal system really wants us to know how valuable womens lives are today - of all fucking days.
The bloke who killed Yuqi Luo and Hyun Sook Jeon in Melbourne just scored SEVEN years in jail. I kid you fucking not. And here's why - because the women were from Asia and hey were sex workers. This utter piece of filth bragged about hurting a sex worker to a mate before killing them. His term is 14 years with parole in 2031.

*CW: This post contains the name and image of an Indigenous woman who was murdered.
❤️SHE MATTERS: CAROLYN McCARTHY!❤️
When people from her community were experiencing domestic violence, 51-year-old Indigenous leader Carolyn McCarthy was always there to lend a hand.
On June 28, Carolyn - a mum to four children - was murdered at Innisfail, Qld. Her partner has been charged over her death.
Carolyn is the 46th of 47 Australian women killed this year.
“She has a lot of love for the community and she was always a part of events like NAIDOC Week, she was a really beautiful woman and she showed respect and was a good role model for the younger ones," a devastated relative said this week.
“She was a beautiful soul and we are still really baffled.”
With strong connections to the Mamu, Bar-Barrum and Yidinji peoples, Carolyn was a dedicated member of the Chjowai Housing Co-Operative Society who was known for her staunch support and care for victims and survivors of domestic violence.
To say her death is a loss for her community and her family is an understatement.
RIP CAROLYN McCARTHY! ❤️

I document ALL unlawful deaths of women and children, regardless of perpetrator gender or relationship between the person killed and the accused. This means not every death is due to domestic and family violence. Australians are also killed by strangers, friends, colleagues, neighbours and other people known to them.

I fully support the imposition of international law.
And the Australian Prime Minister must do likewise @AlboMP
Attack Antisemitism and Islamophobia, and criticise governments and organisations, not our communities.
Keep them safe and care for them all.
International Women’s Day began as a protest movement; a rallying cry for equal pay, voting rights, equality in workplaces & at home.
Victoria has a rich history in that movement. In 2024, it’s a reminder of how far we’ve come – but also how far there is to go. That’s why @Respect__Vic has worked with a local artist to create a public art piece for International Women’s Day 2024 in tribute to women’s rights and safety – the Respect Women mural.
It’s a big year for the Australian women’s liberation movement.
Full Stop Australia’s Director of Client and Clinical Services, Tara Hunter, will be presenting on Day 2 of the Elsie Conference;
Preventing and responding to vicarious trauma and burnout.
There are no easy games in this group, and the goal is top 2.
It’ll be really exciting to see how some the best players in the A-League Women go against one of the traditional powers in the region.
❤️SHE MATTERS: SIVA AUVAE!❤️
For the 71st time this year, I am writing about a woman killed.
Last night mum-of-four Siva Auvae was at her home in Kallangur, Qld. Her partner stabbed her repeatedly. She ran for help but died in the street. He set her home on fire. He died this morning from injuries sustained in the blaze.
Siva is the 71st Australian woman killed this year and the third woman killed in the past 10 days.
Born on Christmas Day, Siva was just a little over two weeks from her 32nd birthday.
Her youngest child is not yet one.
Siva was a much-loved mum, sister, daughter, friend and member of the Australian-New Zealand community.
Like so many of the women killed over the past 11.5 months, her life was stolen by a male known to her - another victim of Australia's femicide epidemic.
RIP SIVA AUVAE! ❤️

First Nations people issued a letter to all Australians, called ‘statement from the heart’. They asked to be recognised in the constitution. In a national vote the people of Australia overwhelmingly rejected them. #TheVoice For those who never bothered reading it before voting, here it is…

Tonight celebrates a legacy of change 🇦🇺
#FIFAWWC#Matildas
England is a country where soccer is their national sport. Millions play it, and they inject hundreds of millions of dollars into funding it. They’re obsessed with it.
Australia puts most sports funding into other games and although lots of kids play soccer, the game has nowhere near the attention, numbers of players or relentless support here it gets in Europe.
Our #Matildas were regularly playing to just a couple of hundred people until very recently. Their pay and conditions were close to pitiful until just a few short years ago. Many of them played for boy’s teams growing up, or had to move states or even continents just to get the game time they needed to excel. They did it HARD.
And as we’ve said a few days ago, they’ve also faced extraordinary misogyny, ridicule and barriers to success, just for being female.
Yet this women’s team have made history by getting to the final four in a tournament fought by nations where soccer is the reason a lot of them get up in the morning.
The Matildas haven’t failed: they’ve won. They’ve won our hearts and minds and changed sport - especially women’s sport - in this country forever.
They should all be so proud, and we should all be so proud of them.
Now it’s our collective responsibility to force our media to value women’s sport and our governments to fund it properly. We must hold their feet to the fire on behalf of all the little girls who deserve their chance to shine.
Thank you, Tillies.
You’re the fucking best, and you did us all proud. It’s been so much fun watching you play.
Good luck in your final #FIFAWomensWorldCup match.
