Jane Goodall inspired me. I especially admired how she extended her empathy for some animals into advocating for compassion to all animals.

This is not the normal reaction. Most people bond with their cat or their dog and think "we really ought to protect cats and dogs." Or they learn about the abuse of elephants in circuses, or of orcas at SeaWorld, and think "we really ought to ban circuses and SeaWorld."

Goodall learned about the rich inner lives of chimps and quickly became a global celebrity. The easy path would have been for her to just stick to saving the chimps. (And she did more than anyone to help them.)

But Goodall extended the logic of empathizing with chimps to empathizing with cows, pigs, and even chickens. As soon as she learned about factory farming -- from reading Animal Liberation -- she went vegetarian. And she started speaking out about factory farming long before it was normal to do so.

She kept speaking out about it for the next 50 years. Even in the last two years (at age 90!), she authored a new blog post and essay on factory farming, which she called "amongst the worst atrocities ever perpetrated by humanity." She was ahead of her time, and will surely be remembered for all time for it.
