Getting the impulse to start a fresh run on this... even though I have a file with 2/3 routes already done it's uhhhhhhhh somewhere in the middle levels of the Palace of the Dead and I... don't want to compromise that save file by leaving without getting the 3 wind god weapons I need or unlocking the shortcuts I'll need to do CODA 2....

I think I want to do something different with the run anyway. I haven't played the Reborn version of this game without dismissing/failing to recruit/killing off the unique characters. One of the underappreciated elements of this game, and one that was difficult to discuss meaningfully in this game's Resonant Arc treatment is that the narrative modifies itself to account for which characters are alive or dead at any given point. This is one of the features that significantly distinguishes it from Matsuno's more famous and more successful Final Fantasy Tactics, where whether uniques are recruited, killed off, or alive doesn't alter anything as characters by and large (Mustadio being the sole exception) disappear from cutscenes after they are recruited in the narrative. Game might give you a Game Over if Rafa dies on Riovannes rooftop but if you kill her in the very next story fight absolutely nothing changes. In fact after Ramza departs from Riovannes at the end of Chapter 3, neither Rafa nor Marach have a speaking line ever again (and Marach... and frankly Rafa too considering her AI's unhinged suicidal tendency on that goddamn rooftop... literally survives only by divine intervention! you'd think he'd be... relevant... to something after that lol).

On the other hand, Tactics Ogre will alter its cutscenes depending on who is alive at a given point. For example in Chapter 2C Denam can recruit the Valerian Liberation Front agent Folcurt, who then asks for help rescuing his friend Bayin, who then asks for help rescuing his friend Cisteena, who then becomes the character who negotiates with Cerya, the leader of the Valerian Liberation Front when Denam finally meets her, as they're sisters. But Folcurt can die in the process of Bayin rescuing. If Bayin is rescued, whether or not Folcurt survives, Bayin requests a rescue of Cisteena. If Bayin is refused, he can't be recruited, and Cisteena dies in pirate captivity, just the same as she would if Bayin died, and never shows up in any scene again. (There is also another scenario, since Cisteena is encountered in Chapter 1 and may be killed in her first meeting, in which case rescuing Bayin leads to him joining without the battle to rescue Cisteena being available since she was already too dead to get captured by pirates). It's possible to rescue Bayin and Cisteena and then in the following battle in Golyat get any or all three characters killed, which leads to variant scenarios when Denam arrives at the Liberation Front Hideout. Rescue Folcurt but don't recruit Bayin, Folcurt introduces the party to Cerya and has a moment after the meeting where he reflects on his role in the organization and asks to join the party. Rescue Cisteena, and she introduces the party. and then has a similar moment herself. These are common scenarios. But another scenario is also possible, in which you rescue Cisteena and then get both Folcurt and Cisteena killed, but Bayin survives in which case Bayin becomes the character who deals with Cerya and becomes disillusioned. Pretty rare because Folcurt is a tanky knight, and Cisteena is pretty hardy herself, but Bayin is a squishy wizard. BUT if all three die, the scene plays out with Denam and Catiua meeting Cerya, and Catiua has a big neurotic freakout and a little speech instead..... not necessarily the best example because the Valeria Liberation Front characters also don't really have lines or much relevance after recruitment. But this kind of variability exists in other places. Cerya herself has several different outcomes. In 2L Denam never goes to her hideout and never meets the Liberation Front people, so Cerya ends up uhh.... gangraped and killed when her fortress gets burned down. In 2C Denam does meet her and potentially scalps her top guys and her sister from her, and she joins Denam in 3C the next time he comes to her fortress (and her sister will even be there to encourage her... if she's still alive) as she agrees with his mission and methods. But in 3N Denam has to rescue her from the dark knights since he comes just in time to interrupt their raid, and it's a SLOG of a fuckin' rescue mission because she's unarmed, surrounded, and debilitated by status effects.... in the OG versions of the game, anyway it's a lot easier on PSP and Reborn... a lot of people just say fuck it and let her die on the SNES/PS1 lol. ...cuz even if you do rescue her she still tells you get fucked because you're a cuckolded hypocrite who rejoined the people who forced you into war crimes and then scapegoated you for them and she doesn't respect that. ...but she can be recruited, optionally, in 4N when Denam is the only big power player left resisting the dark knights and she's been reduced to low piracy, if he follows up on rumors of pirates... as long as he's not a rude asshole to her pirates first (there's an option to kill the pirates instead in which case she fucks off you never even see she was the one behind them).

But a great example is the first unique you recruit is the winged Canopus, also one of the first uniques in Ogre Battle (where he's also easily missable). He has a lot of scenes throughout the game, especially in the context of other Xenobian characters and serves as a wise mentor figure for Denam on occasion. But he can both be killed, refused, or dismissed as soon as he becomes available and doing so removes him from the narrative, and every scene in which he interacts with Denam or the Xenobians follows an alternate script in which he is absent.

So I'm thinking..... I should do a run of the game where I get as many of the uniques killed or unrecruited as often as I can and see what the story looks like when Denam's going solo and see what the game looks like if you're doing it heretically... like Ramza. I've actually never done that before in all my years of playing the game lmfao
