An embarrassed John Hancock returns £16,000 of Harvard College’s money after holding onto it for almost two years in a rush of fervor for revolution.
Hancock had been entrusted as treasurer of Harvard in 1773, but since early 1775, he has been retaining £16,000 of Harvard’s money at his private residence.
