"The Constitution could not be sustained if the country did not first sustain certain virtues of self-restraint among those who administer the government".
Paraphrased from writings of James Madison in the Federalist Papers.
But, what does he know, right?
@MittRomney I knew way back in the 70s when they started hiring software engineers to write embedded code in high level languages instead of letting us hardware engineers do assembly language coding for everything, it would eventually lead to the end of humanity. And here we are.
@John_Hudson I gag when I hear politicians and the media refer to Israel as "our closest ally". Israel, which has virtually no strategic value to the US, has been a royal PITA since 1948. It's time to cut Israel loose and make it learn to get along with its neighbors like other countries.
@washingtonpost Everything republicans let Trump do as president will be powers that they will hand over to democrats who will gladly likewise abuse them as they they travel down the road of proclaimed good intentions. That assumes Trump won't end free and fair elections which he may do.
@StraightArrow__ It's actually pretty amazing what kind of candidates both parties are willing to foist on the US electorate. It's really no wonder that the US is in decline. Voters think nothing of handing their vote to candidates who don't deserve it just because they're from their party.
@rgoodlaw Well, then I guess we'll just have to dump Hegseth and anyone else who has trouble distinguishing the difference between their ass and a hole in the ground.
@joshgerstein@kyledcheney Why stop at the Statue of Liberty? Congress has virtually stopped doing its job. Maybe it's time to bulldoze the Capitol and erect a new Statue of Authoritarianism. Next, the Supreme Court. Trump can decide all those cases by himself and post his rulings on X.
@washingtonpost Trump thinks he's a modern incarnation of the architects of ancient Rome, when he's really nothing more than the lazy unemployable son who inherits more wealth than he could ever imagine and has made it his mission to spend it all building monuments to himself.
@kyledcheney Trump is not "the federal government". If he were, there would be no point in even having a Congress and Judicial branch. Of course, maybe that *is* the point.
@ellee_watson "...give Secretary Hegseth and other Pentagon officials five days to produce a report on why senior military officials were dismissed or fired."
Or what? They threaten a subpoena that carries all the weight of a suggestion?
@HQNewsNow Wow. A seven second video of an old man momentarily closing his eyes while someone else is talking. Shocking.
No wonder people hate politics.
@frankthorp IOW: I'd be fine with a slush fund to reward convicted insurrectionists if we put some lipstick on it so we could at least pretend it was legit for our mindless republican constituencies.
@politico Trump is afraid of people like Putin and Xi. He's friendly with them hoping that, in return, they won't make him sad by bruising his fragile infantile ego.
@politico There's a certain irony to members of Congress who complain about other members getting too much money from lobbyists. The US govt is for sale and is has been for decades.
@kyledcheney "is designed to compensate ... insurrectionists."
The GOP position on that:
Insurrectionism in the service of Trump is no vice and moderation in the weaponization of the DOJ against opponents of Trump is no virtue.
@washingtonpost I'm sure Senate republicans won't have a problem with that despite Blanche's demonstrated utter lack of legal ethics. Ethics are something to be demanded from democrats, not something that they feel compelled to engage in themselves.
