Visited the Lauriya Ashoka Pillar (West Champaran), which is very close to my in-laws’ place. Looks like someone tried to turn it into Mughal architecture. The lower part of the pillar has been completely desecrated.

People in this state get agitated about politics, caste or other small stuff... but hardly about the fact that their greatest heritage is slipping away.

Hats off to the lady from Mumbai who showed a mirror to Minister Girish Mahajan and BJP protestors for blocking traffic to carry out their political protest.
In Mumbai daily commute includes hours of being stuck in traffic jams and instead of understanding the fast losing patience at these gatherings/vip movements that hold up traffic the ruling dispensation doesn’t seem to care, even the minister’s attitude is so disrespectful and dismissive.
Why was BJP protesting on the streets instead of designated ground?
Who gave them the permission to carry out the protest during peak traffic hours?
Why should people suffer due to political showmanship of BJP?

Her anger is not just of hers but every single Mumbaikar who face the commute woes.

हिंदी के जितने क्लासिक उपन्यास हैं उनमें एक तरह की आत्मप���कता है, निजता है। प्रेमचंद के 'गोदान' के होरी में प्रेमचंद की छवि दिखाई देती है, 'शेखर एक जीवनी' के शेखर और शशि को लेकर बहुत लिखा गया है, 'गुनाहों का देवता' की सुधा और चंदर के बारे में भी हिंदी के अंदरख़ाने तरह-तरह की चर्चाएँ होती रही हैं। 'नदी के द्वीप' उपन्यास में लेखक ने उपन्यास में अपनी कहानी लिखी तो बाहर हिंदी समाज में कई कहानियाँ सुनाई जाती रहीं। यही बात मैला आँचल, परती परिकथा, आधा गाँव, रागदरबारी से लेकर पचपन खम्बे लाल दीवारें तक को लेकर रही हैं। जब मैं दिल्ली विश्वविद्यालय में पढ़ने आया था तो जिस वीमेंस कॉलेज के बाहर से गुजरता यह देखने की कोशिश करता कि उसकी दीवारें लाल हैं या नहीं, ख���्बे कितने हैं? कहने का मतलब है कि हम उपन्यास से लेखक को, उसके परिवेश जो जोड़कर देखते और उसमें एक विशेष रोमांच का अनुभव करते थे। यह कहना अनुचित नहीं होगा कि निर्मल वर्मा की आभिजात्य छवि बनाने में उनके उपन्यासों के परिवेश का भी बड़ा योगदान रहा। इसी तरह ��ब मैं विनोद कुमार शुक्ल जी से मिला तब तक मैं उनके सभी उपन्यास पढ़ चुका था और उनके लेखन के ज़बर्दस्त सम्मोहन में भी था। उनसे मिलने के बाद उनके पात्रों की निश्छलता का सूत्र समझ में आया, या मनोहर श्याम जोशी के साथ समय बिताकर उनका भाषा-कौशल। बहुत से नाम गिनवाए जा सकते हैं। मूल बात यह है कि लम्बे समय तक हम लेखक को उसकी रचनाओं से जोड़कर देखते रहे, लेखक के लिखे में उसकी एक न एक छवि आ ही जाती थी। असग़र वजाहत का उपन्यास 'सात आसमान' पढ़ने के बाद मैंने उनको ज्यादा समझा या 'लेकिन दरवाजा' पढ़ने के बाद पंकज बिष्ट से मिला तो तार्किकता को लेकर उनकी ज़िद से उस उपन्यास का नायक जुड़ने लगा।
असल में मैं कहना यह चाहता हूँ कि इक्कीसवीं शताब्दी के उपन्यासों को पढ़ते हुए लेखक का 'आत्म' नहीं दिखाई देता है। हिंदी उपन्यासों का एक बड़ा ��िफ़्ट यह दिखाई दिया कि लेखक अपने आत्म से निकलकर अधिक सार्वजनिक हो गया। वह अपना कम लिखने लगा है और विषयपरक लिखने लगा है। यह अच्छी बात है या बुरी यह नहीं कहना चाहता लेकिन यह एक बदलाव है जो दिखाई देता है।

कांग्रेस के लोकसभा सांसद शशि थरूर ने हाल ही में मणि शंकर अय्यर द्वारा उनके विचारों और उनके “चरित्र” को लेकर की गई टिप्पणी का जवाब दिया है।

अय्यर जी।

लोकतंत्र की खूबी यही है कि लोग अलग-अलग राय रख सकते हैं। असहमति होना गलत नहीं है।
लेकिन सिर्फ इसलिए कि कोई विदेश नीति को थोड़ा अलग तरीके से देखता है, उसकी नीयत या देशभक्ति पर सवाल उठाना ठीक नहीं है। आपने मेरे विचारों और मेरे चरित्र के बारे में जो सार्वजनिक टिप्पणी की है, उसका जवाब देना जरूरी हो गया है।

मैंने हमेशा अंतरराष्ट्रीय मामलों को भारत के राष्ट्रीय हित के नजरिए से देखा है। मेरे लिए भारत की सुरक्षा, भारत की अर्थव्यवस्था और दुनिया में भारत की इज्जत सबसे ऊपर है। दुनिया की राजनीतिक हकीक��� को समझना और भारत के हितों को ध्यान में रखकर फैसला लेना कोई “मोरल सरेंडर” नहीं है — यह जिम्मेदार स्टेटक्राफ्ट है।

भारत की विदेश नीति हमेशा principle और pragmatism दोनों का संतुलन रही है।
Jawaharlal Nehru की Non-Alignment policy से लेकर आज की multi-alignment diplomacy तक भारत का मकसद हमेशा एक ही रहा है, अपनी संप्रभुता की रक्षा करना और दुनिया में न्याय की बात करना। संसद में हो या संसद के बाहर, मेरा रिकॉर्ड इसी संतुलन को दिखाता है।

देशभक्ति पर किसी एक पीढ़ी का अधिकार नहीं है। और न ही गांधी जी या नेहरू जी को समझने का अधिकार किसी एक समूह के पास है। असली सम्मान यही है कि उनके विचारों को आज के समय की हकीकत के साथ समझकर लागू किया जाए।

इतिहास में भी भारत ने कई बार ऐसा किया है कि किसी देश की गलत कार्रवाई को तुरंत सार्वजनिक रूप से नहीं ललकारा, क्योंकि हमारे अपने राष्ट्रीय हित उससे जुड़े हुए थे। उदाहरण के लिए, सोवियत यूनियन के साथ हमारे रिश्ते इतने महत्वपूर्ण थे कि हंगरी, चेकोस्लोवाकिया और अफगानिस्तान के मामलों में भी भारत ने बहुत संतुलित रुख अपनाया।

आज भी खाड़ी देशों के साथ भारत के बहुत बड़े हित जुड़े हैं। लगभग 200 अरब डॉलर का व्यापार, हमारी energy security, और करीब 90 लाख भारतीय वहाँ काम कर रहे हैं। ऐसे में विदेश नीति बनाते समय इन सब बातों को ध्यान मे�� रखना पड़ता है।

यथार्थ को समझना किसी के आगे झुकना नहीं होता। आज अमेरिका में ऐसी सरकार है जो अंतरराष्ट्रीय कानून को हमेशा उसी तरह प्राथमिकता नहीं देती जैसे हम देना चाहते हैं। लेकिन अगर हम उसे खुलकर चुनौती देते हैं तो उसके परिणाम भी हो सकते हैं।

अपने हाल के Indian Express लेख में मैंने साफ लिखा है कि यह युद्ध अंतरराष्ट्रीय कानून के खिलाफ है, इसके गंभीर परिणाम हो सकते हैं और इसे तुरंत खत्म होना चाहिए। लेकिन साथ ही मैंने यह भी कहा कि अमेरिका के साथ हमारे कई महत्वपूर्ण हित जुड़े हैं, उन्हें खतरे में डालना समझदारी नहीं होगी। विदेश नीति आखिरकार राष्ट्रीय हित के बारे में ही होती है, केवल भाषण देने या दिखावे की राजनीति करने के बारे में नहीं।

मेरी विदेश यात्राओं को लेकर जो आरोप लगाए गए हैं, वे बिल्कुल बेबुनियाद हैं।
Operation Sindoor को छोड़कर मेरी बाकी विदेश यात्राएँ मेरी private capacity में होती हैं। न उन्हें सरकार आयोजित करती है, न सरकार उनका खर्च उठाती है। दुनिया भर के कई विश्वविद्यालय और संस्थान मुझे बुलाते हैं, जितने निमंत्रण आते हैं, उनमें से ज्यादातर को मैं अपने काम के कारण स्वीकार भी नहीं कर पाता।

जहाँ तक क्षेत्रीय राजनीति की बात है, मेरे विचार सालों से एक जैसे रहे हैं।
मैंने हमेशा Israel और Palestine के बीच two-state solution का समर्थन किया है। और यह भी कहा है ��ि पाकिस्तान में अक्सर ऐसा लगता है कि वहाँ सेना के पास देश है, न कि देश के पास सेना।

Operation Sindoor के बाद जब हमने दुनिया में भारत का पक्ष रखा, तो मेरा संदेश साफ था —
"भारत बुद्ध और गांधी की भूमि है। हम शांति चाहते हैं। लेकिन शांति का मतलब कमजोरी नहीं होता। अगर आतंकवाद हमारे लोगों की जान लेगा, तो भारत मजबूती से जवाब देगा।"

सबरीमाला के मुद्दे पर भी आपकी आलोचना मुझे थोड़ी अजीब लगी। एक तरफ आप मुझे “गलत विचारों” के लिए कोसते है��, दूसरी तरफ उसी मुद्दे पर पार्टी के निर्णय के साथ खड़े होने के लिए भी आलोचना करते हैं।

मेरी जन्मतिथि को लेकर की गई टिप्पणी भी इस बहस से जुड़ी नहीं है। महात्मा गांधी का सम्मान करने के लिए यह जरूरी नहीं कि किसी को उनकी गोद में खेलने का मौका मिला हो। मैंने गांधी जी और नेहरू जी पर काफी लिखा है और उनका सम्मान मेरे विचारों में गहराई से मौजूद है।

विदेश नीति के तरीकों पर मतभेद होना स्वाभाविक है। लेकिन principled pragmatism को गलत समझना ��ीक नहीं है। मेरा मानना है कि भारत को ऐसी राष्ट्रवादी सोच की जरूरत है जो नैतिक मूल्यों और वास्तविक दुनिया की राजनीति, दोनों को साथ लेकर चले।

आपने कांग्रेस अध्यक्ष पद के चुनाव में मेरा समर्थन किया, उसके लिए मैं आपका आभारी हूँ।
और जब आपको पार्टी से निलंबित किया गया था, तब मैंने भी आपके समर्थन में आवाज उठाई थी। मुझे खुशी है कि वह निर्णय बाद में ठीक किया गया।

आपने अपने पत्र के अंत में “रास्ते अलग होने” की बात कही। सच यह है कि आपरेशन सिंदूर पर मेरे बोलने के बाद से ही आप लगातार मेरे बारे में कई टिप्पणियाँ कर रहे थे। मैंने अब तक सार्वजनिक रूप से प्रतिक्रिया नहीं दी थी, लेकिन आपकी हाल की टिप्पणियों के बाद जवाब देना जरूरी हो गया, इसलिए दे रहा हूँ।

and then there's Africa…the youngest continent on earth, median age 19, projected to reach 2.5 billion people by 2050, the largest workforce the planet has ever seen & China understood 20y ago that whoever builds Africa's infrastructure owns the 21st century, while the US was spending 4 trillion dollars destroying Iraq & Afghanistan China was building railways in Kenya, dams in Ethiopia, ports in Djibouti, highways in Nigeria, tech hubs in Rwanda, stadiums, hospitals, government buildings, telecom networks powered by Huawei across the entire continent.. & they did it without firing a single bullet, no regime change, no sanctions, no lectures on democracy, just concrete steel, fiber optic and longterm contracts

so when people ask why China stays silent on Iran the answer is that silence is the strategy, every war America fights for Israel costs trillions, destabilizes energy markets, alienates Gulf partners and pushes the entire Global South closer to a system Beijing spent two decades building

आज फणीश्वरनाथ रेणु का जन्मदिन है. रेणु जी के 'मैला आँचल' को समझने का एक सन्दर्भ आजादी के बाद का भाषा विवाद भी हो सकता है. उस समय हिंदी को लेकर यह बहस चल रही थी कि हिंदी उर्दू मिश्रित हिन्दुस्तानी की शैली में लिखी जाए या तत��सम शब्दावली में. इस बहस में कहीं भी उन बोलियों का सन्दर्भ नहीं था जिनकी बुनियाद पर हिंदी खड़ी हुई थी. रेणु जी वे पहले लेखक थे जिन्होंने इस और ध्यान दिलाया कि हिंदी सबसे जीवंत बोलियों के मिश्रण से होती है, बोलियों के बिना हिंदी समाज को यथार्थ रूप में नहीं दिखाया जा सकता है. 'मैला आँचल' लिखकर उन्होंने इस बात को प्रमाणित किया.

'सोमरसेट मॉम कहा करते थे कि या तो आप पूर्णकालिक लेखक हैं या फिर लेखक हैं ही नहीं। मैं भी इस बात पर विश्वास करता ��ूँ। लेकिन चूँकि बांग्ला में लिखकर जीविका चलाना संभव नहीं है, इसलिए मैं केवल लेखक बनकर नहीं रह सका। जब काम से थक जाता हूँ, तो घर लौटकर लेखक के जीवन में प्रवेश करता हूँ, और जब लेखन से थक जाता हूँ, तो फिर अपनी नौकर��� पर लौट जाता हूँ। यही क्रम चलता रहा है। फिर भी दूसरे पेशों और लेखन के बीच एक बुनियादी अंतर है। किसी संस्था में मैनेजर का काम होता है—उचित लोगों को उचित काम में लगाना और उनसे सब कुछ करवा लेना। लेकिन लेखक के पास ऐसा कोई विकल्प नहीं होता कि आप अपना काम किसी और से करवा लें। यहाँ हर चीज़ आपकी अपनी जिम्मेदारी है, और अपने हिस्से का काम किसी दूसरे से करवाना साहित्यिक चोरी के बराबर है।'
