I'm doing a sketch & write thing for Inktober. Here's the blog post to go with the Maomao sketch I shared yesterday. Skip to paragraph 3 for Maomao and Kusuriya content.

Victoria of Many Faces' schtick of using a shift to manga panel then back to actual animation works again in #2, it's just a really really REALLY good narrative device
Good enshutsu usually beats good sakuga, and it's very applicable to Victoria of Many Faces: #2's action animation isn't something to write home about, but just the directing, excellent camera work and the use of lighting stands out to show Victoria, Jeffrey and Nonna's feelings
Aw I was looking forward to Night Dancer as ED for the Supermarket Smoking anime. Seems that was just for the mini episodes. New ED for the show is also by same artist but doesn't hit like ND.
Today—54 yrs ago—the Mossad killed Ghassan Kanafani & his niece in Beirut.
“A commando who never fired a gun, whose weapon was a ball-point pen and his arena the newspaper pages,” wrote the Daily Stars for his obituary.
Kanafani was born in Acre/Akka & expelled at the age of 12.
"Lifelong bachelor finally finds an absolutely gorgeous life partner with an absolutely cute daughter to boot, much to the shock of everyone around him" should be a good headline for this, heh
The most characteristic Kuno part is the chorus, though. Sumptuous morphing over sepia tones defined her student and independent work & it still kicks ass
On a brighter note: Yoko Kuno's opening is lovely. There's a tinge of fantasy to the colors that feels characteristic of her, in contrast to the more grounded palette of the show itself. Beautiful and a great fit for the more dramatic framing of the OP
Yamada mentioned that she can't take her usual Filmed Animation approach in Jaadugar, so the modifications of the lighting for emotional storytelling purposes are rooted in natural elements rather than artificial lens emulation. Great example here with a life's literal sunset
Admist all the cruelty, Yamada's second episode also has more room for physical intimacy. Both series directors agree in filtering the narrative through her personal experience rather than twisting it into a more detached historical account, so these moments are very valuable
This creates a massive contrast when you reach the pillaging of the city, which destroys all man-made craft. As beautiful as it is, the anime's hazy rendering of the BGs misses the impact of the manga's hypnotizing patterning, but the concept remains fundamentally great
Another key aspect of Jaadugar is that patterns play a key role as cultural signifiers. Everything in Tus is beautifully adorned, demonstrating not just the respect behind the depiction but also establishing this as a flourishing, rich culture
