▪️Global Pressure Belts for UPSC Prelims
👉 What are Pressure Belts?
Zones of high & low atmospheric pressure formed due to unequal heating of the Earth’s surface.
They play a key role in global wind circulation.
👉 There are 7 Major Pressure Belts (from Equator to Poles):
➤ Equatorial Low (0°)
➤ Subtropical High (30° N & S)
➤ Subpolar Low (60° N & S)
➤ Polar High (90° N & S)
👉 Why do they form?
• Equator: Intense heating → warm air rises → low pressure.
• 30°: Air descends after rising at the equator → high pressure.
• 60°: Collision of cold & warm winds → rising air → low pressure.
•. Poles: Cold sinking air → high pressure.
▫️Primary Winds Generated by These Belts:
→ Trade Winds: From Subtropical High to Equatorial Low
→ Westerlies: From Subtropical High to Subpolar Low
→ Polar Easterlies: From Polar High to Subpolar Low
