NFU is a lollipop the civilian bureaucracy quietly conjured for itself.
It decouples pay from responsibility and rewards the mere passage of time over actual performance.
By design, you needn't rise, or deliver. You only need to exist. That alone is an outrage.
But the truly unconscionable part is that having opened the treasury for their own comfort, the same establishment denies identical benefits to the military, the one service that actually needs it (if one were to accept the logic behind the bureaucracy getting it!).
The armed forces operate under a pyramid so steep that officers retire at ranks well below their potential, not because they're poor performers, but because the structure simply runs out of room. They're penalised for the structure of their own organisation.
That the bureaucracy should invent a remedy for this exact problem, claim it entirely for themselves, and then tell the soldier "Hey, this is not for you chaps!",is an insult.
Ideally, NFU should not have existed, but if it does, why should only some services corner its benefits?
In Tokyo, there's a cleaning crew that does the impossible every 12 minutes.
They're called TESSEI. They clean the Shinkansen bullet trains at Tokyo Station.
When a train arrives, it stops for 12 minutes before departing again.
Two minutes for passengers to exit.
Three more for the next batch to board.
That leaves seven.
In those seven minutes, one person must:
- Clean 100 seats
- Wipe every tray table
- Vacuum the floor
- Rotate every seat to face the new direction of travel
- Replace all headrest covers
- Check the overhead bins
- Bow to incoming passengers
Seven. Minutes.
They do this hundreds of times a day.
Harvard Business School published a case study about them.
The New York Times called it "the 7-minute miracle."
Tourists now stand on the platform just to watch.
Before they start, they bow to the train.
When they finish, they line up and bow to the passengers.
They're paid by the hour. Many are in their 50s and 60s.
Japan didn't invent cleaning.
They invented the dignity of doing small things perfectly.

Brief History
Veterans Day in India came to be celebrated from 2017. The day chosen was 14 Jan, for it was on 14 Jan 53 that India's first Indian Army Chief Field Marshal KM Cariappa demitted office & became a veteran. Veterans Day Parade in Mumbai was first organized in 2019 and, post Covid, in 2023 & 2024, largely under coordination by the Navy Foundation, Mumbai Chapter (NFMC).
The concept of celebration of Veterans is not new. In the West, Veterans Day is variously commemorated as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day on the second Sunday of November (the Sunday closest to 11 Nov, the Armistice Day). Begun in Remembrance of those who fought in World War 1, it has, over the years, come to commemorate all those who participated in subsequent wars. Similarly, Australia & New Zealand commemorate the Gallipoli Day on 25 April every year in memory of their participation in the Gallipoli Campaign of WW 1. Not many know that India too had significant participation in Gallipoli War.
Veterans Day events are marked by graceful gaiety and solemn dignity. They consist of wreath laying, parades/walks and other forms of interaction with citizens. They also include Remembrance of those who were Killed in Action (KIA), those that went missing or didn't return home and those who were injured. Veterans Day gives an opportunity for the people to honour those who served and to salute their sacrifice.
Veterans Day Parade in Mumbai on the iconic Marine Drive seeks to bring some elements of the Experience. Grizzled old Veterans, Veer Naris (spouses of those departed), gallantry award winners, other Veterans including those pursuing different careers, women Veterans whose numbers in Armed Forces have steadily increased and many others, will be joined by NCC Cadets and serving Armed Forces personnel and families. The Parade will be Flagged Off by the Honourable @maha_governor, Shri CP Radhakrishnan.
Hundreds of citizens are expected to line up and cheer the Veterans.
Join the Parade. Experience the Occasion.
