There is always some confusion about tithis and festivals. The recent one being about Akshay Tritiya
First understand the essence of mahurata. A good mahurata has primarily 5 components : Tithi, nakshtra ,yoga, karan and vaar.
This decides the quality of the day.
What is tithi - 12 degree angular distance between sun and moon is one tithi. On peak amavasya the distance between sun and moon is 0 degree. Then moon starts moving away. From 0 degree to 12 degree it's shukla pratipada. 12 degree to 24 degree it's shukla dwitiya and so on. On purnima this distance is 180 degrees and then moon starts moving towards sun and the Krishna Paksha begins.
Total 30 tithi equals to 360 degree.
This angular distance between sun and moon is the key to decide the mahurata.
This year the tritiya tithi started around 10:49 am on 19th april and was over at 7:27 am today.
The mahurata decides when you can utilise the energy of the day to the max. So if you are celebrating today the angular distance of sun and moon is more than 36 degrees already. Do you really think you can tap into that energy today ??
If you had celebrated the festival before 7:27 am and done with all your rituals then that's still ok. Anything that you are doing after 7:27 am thinking it's tritiya tithi is illogical and baseless. When you are considering which day to celebrate the festival use this knowledge. Check the tithi madhya. Which day it's falling. That will also indicate which day is better day to celebrate. Hope this helps serious Astro enthusiasts.
