Position Sizing -The Most Underrated Skill in Trading

Most traders focus on what to buy.
Professionals focus on how much to buy.
hence only less than 1% are successful in trading.

That’s where position sizing comes in.

What is Position Sizing?
It’s deciding how much capital to allocate to a trade based on:
1. Your risk per trade (RPT), normally 0.5-1% of Capital
2. Your stop loss (SL), normally 5-12% of stock price.
Not based on gut feeling or random quantity.

Core Rule:
Your risk per trade should be fixed, not your quantity.

Example from the slide:
Capital: ₹10,00,000
Risk per trade: 0.5% → ₹5,000
Buy price: ₹120
Stop loss: ₹114
Risk per share: ₹6
Method 1 (Direct way):
Quantity = Risk per trade / Risk per share
= 5000 / 6 ≈ 833 shares
Position size = 833 × 120 ≈ ₹1,00,000
Method 2 (Percentage way):
PS% = RPT% / SL% = 0.5 / 5 = 10%
Position size = 10% of capital = ₹1,00,000
Quantity = 100000 / 120 ≈ 833 shares

Key Takeaways:
1. Never buy random quantities
2. Always define risk first, then size
3. Same risk across trades = consistency
4. Smaller SL → bigger position
5. Bigger SL → smaller position

Why this matters:
1. Protects your capital
2. Keeps losses controlled
3. Removes emotional decision-making
4. Allows you to survive losing streaks

with 0.5% RPT, it will take 200 trades to wipe out your capital, someone losing 200 trades consecutively is not possible if this method is followed.

In trading, you don’t control outcomes
But you can always control risk and position size

That’s your real EDGE.

Use this method in your trading / investing, it will become stress free and outcome will be in your control.
