On September 3, 1783, the American Revolution officially ended when the Treaty of Paris was signed. Britain recognized the independence of the 13 former colonies, and the new nation’s borders were set from Florida to the Great Lakes and from the Atlantic to the Mississippi.

Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and John Jay negotiated for the United States; David Hartley signed for Britain. Preliminary articles had been agreed in November 1782; Congress ratified the treaty on January 14, 1784.
