Collaborative problem solving using student created word problems involving decimal operations in the real world. Ss clarify vocabulary and context, talk through and justify their approach, judge the reasonableness of their answer as they compare finals answers to their estimate.

Encouraging Ss to include the word "because" in their explanations can be a game changer.

"The statement "I added two more" becomes "I added two more because..." which provides much more insight into their understanding/thinking.

We need to ask "Why did you....?" more often.

Correct answers can be misleading.

Just because students get the correct answer does not mean that they understand...

Effective questions allow us to gain insight into the thinking behind the answer. That is what we need to assess. That is where the truth can be found.

The ONLY way we can gather information about student learning is through what they say, do, write/draw. The ONLY way we can gain insight about student thinking is by posing good questions so they can describe/explain/justify what they said, did, wrote/drew.
