Great to present some initial results from my PhD at the @QuaternaryRA_UK ADM, had some great discussions around my poster about revisiting the chronology of Whitrig Bog with many recalling being taught about the site on the @CQRRHUL MSc Quaternary Science course!
#QRA24
To all QRA members at INQUA Roma 2023. We plan to have a lunchtime meeting ( 1300) on Monday 17th in Scienze della terra Room 11 to discuss any matters arising from the Congress and any notices from the Exec. Please do join us @QuaternaryRA_UK#INQUARoma2023
Presented at my first international conference yesterday! I was both nervous and excited to present to the @INT_I_MA_TE_Net community at @InquaRoma2023 but it was good experience early on in the PhD!
And lucky to be on the coolest day of the week in Rome 🫠
PhD student @AnnaBeckett98 presented updates to the Varved sediment database (VARDA) to improve the temporal accuracy and resolution of environmental reconstructions. Check out the pre-print of her paper here: https://t.co/58GHgRsnhr #RHULGeogPostgrad#INQUARoma2023
CQR have arrived @InquaRoma2023! Ready for a week of Quaternary Science. Stay tuned…we will be showcasing our highlights from our department @RHULGeography on this account #INQUARoma2023 🦣
Final two project days on the MSc Glen Roy trip spent building a coring rig for a new lochan site on the Corrour estate - with great success (it stayed afloat!).
Got some nice cores over the two days from the lake itself and some very wet bogs!
And finally home this evening after a 6am start from Roy Bridge and ~3 weeks since I last stepped foot in my flat!
If anyone needs me in the next few days - I will be sleeping 😴
Was great to attend the trip only a few days officially into my PhD at RHUL, and thanks to my supervisors @AdepalmerA and @IanPMatthews for letting me tag along!
A great start to the next 3.5 yrs!
Almost back at Egham with a bit of Johnny Cash on the radio to get us there. And contributed Great trip with the MSc students and thanks to all who came along @IanPMatthews @AnnaBeckett98 @RHULGeography @CQRRHUL
Delighted that the @RHULGeography MSc Quaternary Science field trip visited #Corrour#Forest this week to collect sediment cores for their #research investigating glacial #geomorphology. An impressive set up to achieve this afloat on a lochan! Thanks also for the field guide 🤩
Final teaching day in #GlenRoy today. Bringing together all the research and theories discussed over the last few days in an iconic setting ft. a very moody Scottish landscape!
Next up is student project days!
It's a bit of mystery site, so we don't know much about it or why it exists... yet!
MSc students gained more experience with russian coring, and it was tough going even with all hands on deck!
Is it inside or outside the Loch Lomond Readvance limits?
Discussions of previous work at the site including radiocarbon dates, tephra layers and proxy records that give us clues on the sequence of late glacial events in this part of Scotland.

Moving on to discussions of the timing of events in this region during the Late Glacial, we visited a classic late glacial site - Loch Etteridge!
MSc students took some basal core sediments of the infilled lake basin to look at the lithostratigraphy of the site.
